Job Description
Job Responsibilities:
+ Provide support as determined by the department for research, extension, and academic programs to meet the needs of the department.
+ Responsible for conducting independent research into the field of Food Science and related fields.
+ Writes and may contribute to research papers, articles, and publications.
+ Proactively seek and coordinate grant writing activities targeting federal, foundation, and private industry sources. Analyze food science data (current and historical) for trends and patterns relevant to decision-making, grant writing, and scientific publications, in collaboration with food scientists, technologists, and statisticians.
+ Laboratory supervision: Coordinate equipment scheduling, coordinate laboratory safety and ensure good laboratory practices, supervise student workers.
+ Provide upkeep and maintenance of laboratory instruments and food processing equipment, and other activities as determined by supervisor.
+ Purchase, keep inventory of laboratory reagents, consumables, food processing materials, instruments.
+ Develop and conduct programs including leadership training, conference, seminars and workshops.
+ Provide leadership and support for the development and execution of processional communication material and strategies to promote the department.
+ Be familiar with university policies, rules, and regulations, and ensure they are followed.
+ Be familiar with USDA, FDA, and Texas food safety and labeling regulations, and ensure they are followed at departmental pilot processing facilities.
+ Participate in collaborative meetings and scientific events within state and nationally.
+ May assist student researchers, Postdoctoral Associate Researchers, and/or graduate students who are working on research related to projects.
+ Serve as guest lecturer to undergraduate courses in area of expertise when called upon.
+ Other duties as determined by the department head to meet departmental needs.
Required Education:
PhD degree in Food Science and Technology,
or a related field
Preferred Education and Experience:
Postdoctoral training in food science or closely related field. Practical experience in the food industry, or quality control/analytical laboratory environment. Grant writing and/or technical scientific writing experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Statistical software and data analysis skills
Ability to critically review and interpret scientific literature
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Computer hardware and software skills
Word processing, spreadsheet and large data handling, graphing and presentation skills.
Detail-oriented.
Ability to stand in the laboratory for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to organize and summarize large bodies of data to enable decision-making;
Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others'
