PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Assistant Scientist performs lab or pilot scale work focused on developing new products and processes in applications for glass nonwoven materials under the direction of product scientists and process engineers. This individual produces data and samples for glass mat development, mixture and coating formulations, equipment operation and maintenance, and characterization of experimental products. The successful candidate performs experimental work, provides actionable observations, and communicates experimental results. The individual will have the opportunity to build strong technical expertise in nonwovens testing and processing. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Commitment to Safety (10%)
Unconditionally comply with all safety procedures and Owens Corning corporate safety policies. Live the Owens Corning safety culture daily, and actively participate in safety meetings, audits, and activities. Proactively identifies and addresses safety concerns in the laboratory.
Product and Process Development (80%)
Deliver test and characterization data, lab or pilot material, and insights to product scientists and process engineers for product or process development of nonwoven products through hands-on lab testing and characterization, preparing chemical formulations, and operating lab or pilot scale fabrication and mimic equipment. Develop proficiency and fundamental understanding of established test methods used to generate required results (ASTM, TAPPI, established test methods). Adapt or create methods and protocols as necessary to characterize new products and technologies. Apply and develop scientific and engineering principles for fiberglass-based nonwovens products and properties in collaboration with product scientists and process engineers.
Laboratory Continuous Improvement or Projects (10%)
Drive lab operations or lab projects (method implementation, equipment upgrades, continuous improvement) for quality and productivity improvements including documentation, user training, process optimization, and lab digitization. Support the transfer of new product/processes from the laboratory to manufacturing plant or customer as needed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school/Associates degree in technical field with 1-3 years’ experience or Bachelor’s Degree in technical field Ability to perform laboratory testing following established lab procedures for lab instrumentation such as Instrons, air permeability, and colorimeters. Ability to use and operate laboratory and pilot equipment independently to produce material samples. Ability to travel up to 10%
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering Chemical, mechanical, or QA lab experience. Lab instrument interfacing and export capability with some programming ability. Experience auditing and implementing new test methods, SOPs from ASTM, ISO, TAPPI standards.
