Assistant Scientist in astronomical space-based technology, experimentation, and instrumentation
Classification Title:

Assistant Scientist

Job Description:

An Assistant Scientist position in astronomical space-based technology, experimentation, and instrumentation in science programs specializing in ultraviolet astrophysics is available to work with Dr. Keri Hoadley in the Department of Astronomy to begin in Spring 2025. This is a twelve-month, non-tenure-accruing, time-limited position. A successful candidate is expected to lead independent astronomical experimentation, technology development, and instrumentation programs alongside Dr. Hoadley’s group.

Applications are invited for an Assistant Scientist position in research related to a variety of ultraviolet (UV) experimental astrophysics topics. Prof. Keri Hoadley’s UV Space Lab (HUSL) at the University of Florida (UF) engages in active research, development, testing, and qualification on cutting edge grating technologies for space-based platforms, designing/implementing novel UV suborbital and space instruments (suborbital, Pioneers, and Explorer-class), and are heavily involved in ground and space based science projects across a broad range of scientific topics, including, but not limited to: the circumgalactic and intergalactic media, the interstellar medium, planet-forming disks, star-planet interactions, stellar physics, star formation, and (non-)compact object mergers/collisions. The ideal applicant may contribute to ongoing HUSL research and space instrumentation programs, but is expected to lead complimentary, independent programs using HUSL facilities on the UF campus.

We seek a qualified candidate to lead current, planned, and independent UV space instrumentation programs at UF. Applicants are expected to lead their own research programs and support current mission development efforts, including leading day-to-day planning and management of ongoing projects, grant preparation, and participate in peer mentoring within the UV space program. Applicants with experience working with astronomical instruments and/or technology and with mission development experience at any and all stages of mission planning are strongly preferred. Applicants are encouraged to show resiliency, problem-solving skills and creativity, and proficiency in NASA grant and program structures.

The candidate must have PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, or other relevant space sciences. The must have experience leading astronomical instrumentation programs/missions through at least NASA’s suborbital program (e.g., sounding rocket or balloon mission build and launch). This position will be initially awarded for one year and may be renewed contingent upon strong performance and conduct and availability of funds.

UF is the state’s oldest, largest, and most comprehensive land grant university with an enrollment of over 50,000 students and was ranked 7th in the country among public universities (US News and World Report 2025 rankings), and 1st among public institutions in the Wall Street Journal 2023 survey. UF is located in Gainesville, a city of approximately 150,000 residents in North-Central Florida, 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, and 67 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, and within a 2-hour drive to large metropolitan areas (Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville).
