Job Summary

The job manages multiple related teams of managers and professional staff who execute programs designed to meet fundraising goals for contributed income. Manages relationships with alumni, faculty, administrators and organizations with potential to make gifts. Develops communication strategies for projects and contributes to the development of larger advancement strategies.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice President and Associate Dean, the Assistant Vice President is responsible for leading a team of up to five or more that drives MBSD’s principal and transformational gift functions and activities, including but not limited to campaign analysis, goal setting, strategy development, and development of big ideas and fundable opportunities to advance the mission of University. The Assistant Vice President is responsible for developing effective metrics for campaign management with a goal to achieve a significantly higher level of principal and transformational gift fundraising during the upcoming campaign. They will carry a portfolio of up to 40 or more principal and transformational gift prospects with a focus on those with a capacity of $5M+. They will carry an individual fundraising goal in the range of $7 to $15M.

The Assistant Vice President has explicit oversight and responsibility for select strategic initiatives ; examples include neuroscience, microbiome and others as assigned. They also staff Centers and Institutes across the University enterprise, working with their leadership to advance fundraising priorities.

A member of the Executive Leadership Team, they work closely with senior leadership to set annual and campaign fundraising goals and create strategies to meet those goals, with a focus on growing the principal and transformational gift pipeline to meet the ambition of the institution. As a senior member of the office and a fundraising leader they participate in strategic planning and policy decisions for MBSD as appropriate.

Collaborate and partner with MBSD leadership, faculty, trustees, and other volunteer leadership in the pursuit of philanthropic support for priority programs and fundable opportunities. Liaise with these leaders to help create compelling fundraising messages and strategies to create principal and transformational gift opportunities within these priority areas.

They utilize resources of the development research team to accurately identify and qualify prospective donors. Create personalized cultivation and solicitation strategies for each prospect, including gift opportunities based on University priorities. They will cultivate high-capacity individuals for annual and campaign priorities.

Coordinates and participates in visits with prospective donors for the purposes of qualification, cultivation and solicitation.

The Assistant Vice President will supervise a team of up to or more than five who support principal and transformational gift initiatives and goals.

In managing the Principal Gifts team, they identify and use appropriate resources and channels to successfully plan and accomplish projects involving multiple teams.

Develops department strategies and plans to achieve fundraising goals.    

Manages and maintains a portfolio of current and potential donors. Identifies and cultivates gift prospects and potential donors through events, visits, personalized correspondences, and phone calls. ​

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible development experience or progressively responsible experience in a closely related field such as not-for-profit management, personal wealth management, pharmaceutical sales and/or marketing, corporate business development, marketing an intangible product or service.

Demonstrated track record of organizing successful fundraising or marketing activities.

An advanced graduate or professional degree in business, marketing, management, or higher education administration.

Experience at a large, complex institution, preferably an academic medical center or institution of higher education.

Experience and proven success in managing a fundraising portfolio with major and principle gift level solicitations and gift closures. 

Experience and proven success in donor base pipeline development.

An interest and knowledge base in health care economics, scientific and medical research, health care policy, or pharmaceuticals.

Significant experience leading a team and progressively increasing responsibilities in a complex environment.

Preferred Competencies

Demonstrated ability to manage the individual solicitation process from identification, through qualification, cultivation and solicitation.

Demonstrated effective decision-making; while working autonomously and exercising good judgement.

Demonstrated ability to utilize office resources efficiently and effectively.

The ability to absorb medical and basic science information quickly and convey that information convincingly to donor prospects.

Executive presence and confidence to represent MBSD in various forums.

Superior oral and written communications skills.

Comfort and experience in working both as a team player and independently.

Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks so that goals are met in a timely, efficient manner.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to relate well to individuals at every level of an organization both internally and externally.

Tactful exercise of judgment and discretion with sensitive and highly confidential information.

An exceptional work ethic and track record of personal initiative.
