Summary of Position:
This hands-on Analytical Chemist position will be responsible for carrying out analytical testing to support Celanese divisions. The individual should have basic understanding of general chemistry, analytical chemistry, and organic chemistry, and some hands-on experience with analytical techniques, including thermal or rheology analysis, spectroscopy, microscopy, chromatography, or wet chemistry. The individual should be able to handle common lab chemicals safely. Responsibilities include preparing samples, carrying out routine analytical procedures, analyzing data and preparing reports for internal customers, and some instrument maintenance/troubleshooting. Individual must be able to effectively communicate with internal customers and global lab team members, follow written SOPs, perform minor equipment repairs, and ensure compliance with standardized methods (ISO, ASTM, VDA, etc.).
Responsibilities:
Desirable Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
• Knowledge of polymeric materials and their properties
• Hands-on experience with analytical chemistry techniques such as NMR, FTIR, GPC, TGA, DSC, DMA, TMA, SEM, microscopy, GC, LC, MS, IV
• Ability to identify the appropriate analytical technique to troubleshoot when presented with a problem
• Knowledge of polymer structure-processing-performance relationship
• Fluency with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and statistical software
• Experience with DOE's, method validation (R&R) demonstration
• Excellent technical writing and presentation skills
• Experience managing projects and balancing competing priorities
• Preferred B.S. in Chemistry, Material Science, or related field. Candidate must have completed general and organic chemistry. Course work in material science and/or polymer science is preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret data and provide compete/thorough presentations/reports
• Experience with engineering polymers or plastics
• Ability to pro-actively design methods to meet customer needs
• Ability to identify potential sources of error in an experiment and implement controls to mitigate them
• Effective communication - both verbal and written
• Strong understanding and commitment to safe lab practice and chemical handling
• Ability to organize, keep detailed documentation/records, and achieve timely, accurate results
• Ability to make minor repairs to lab equipment
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and be part of the team
• Ability to manage projects and competing priorities
• Must strive for continuous improvement
• Must be energetic, self-motivated
