About the Department
 

The Division of the Humanities comprises 19 degree programs across 16 departments and committees, with approximately 800 students from around the world enrolled in PhD, MFA, and MA programs, 200 tenure-track faculty, 150 other academics, 135 staff, 300+ student employees, and numerous visitors and temporary employees. Students and faculty dedicate themselves to the thoughtful consideration of humanity’s place in the world. This dedication is displayed through interdisciplinary centers and programs as well as workshops on diverse themes ranging from political theory to contemporary art to animal studies. Staff play a vital role in the day-to-day functions and success of the Division.


Job Summary
 

Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs is a member of the senior leadership team and plays a crucial role in the strategic leadership and operational management of academic programs within the Division. The position works closely with the Dean, faculty, and university administration to ensure the delivery of high-quality educational programs and initiatives that promote student success, academic excellence, and faculty development. The Associate Dean assists with faculty appointments, curriculum development, program assessment, chair mentoring, and overall academic administration.

Responsibilities

Core areas of responsibility include academic leadership, strategic planning and policy implementation, fostering interdisciplinary and collaborative initiatives, committee participation and representation, faculty support and development, and people management and supervision.Oversees the development and implementation of academic programs, courses, and curricula in collaboration with faculty and department chairs.Coordinates program assessment and accreditation efforts to ensure compliance with university and external standards.Monitors academic performance and outcomes, making recommendations for improvements and implementing changes.Participates in strategic planning processes, providing input on academic priorities and goals.Assists in the development and implementation of academic policies and procedures.Works with leadership on resource allocation and budgeting for academic programs.Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across departments and schools.Fosters partnerships with external organizations and stakeholders to enhance academic offerings and opportunities.Serves on University committees and represents the Division in various academic forums.Facilitates communication and collaboration between faculty, administration, and other University stakeholders.Supports faculty recruitment, retention, and development initiatives.Collaborates with faculty on curriculum development and course design.Directly supervises Director, Academic Affairs. Indirectly supervises Assistant Director and/or Academic Affairs Administrator.Develops and maintains best practices and process documentation such as procedure manuals and standard operating procedures, for department operations to ensure efficient workflow, appropriate collaboration with other offices, and continuity.Discusses performance goals and promotes professional development opportunities. Engages in annual performance management process. Provides feedback and guidance to staff on day-to-day, short-term, and long-term activities.Leads research and contributes to strategic planning for faculty and chair development; relocation of families with dual careers.Creates training and programming for faculty and chair development and recommends training and/or program improvements.Prepares and presents analyses, reports, and marketing materials to a wide variety of both internal and external audiences. May lead a variety of committees/teams and with a diverse array of colleagues and partners.Conducts complex research and data gathering (e.g., Internet research, surveys), project planning, and implementation for a wide range of projects.Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:

Doctoral degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution.

Experience:

10+ years of experience in higher education administration or academic leadership.Backgrouind with curriculum development, program assessment, and faculty support.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

Proficient in Microsoft Suite.Knowledge of accreditation standards and academic policies.
