Job Description:

The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering (HWCOE) invites internal applications for the position of Associate Dean for Research and Innovation (ADRI). We seek a visionary and highly capable leader with a strong commitment to excellence in research, innovation, and collaboration. We are looking for an individual who not only has a strong research background, but also possesses the leadership qualities required to excel at this job, e.g., high emotional intelligence, effective communication skills, adaptability, and integrity.

Duties of the current position (Associate Dean for Research and Facilities) will be modified in two important ways. First, the ADRI will recruit an assistant dean or director for research operations (described in duty #3 below) to provide the ADRI with bandwidth to accelerate this office’s efforts on research development and to continue their personal research. Accordingly, this is a 12-month administrative appointment at a 0.7 FTE in the College to cover the ADRI duties described below and a 0.3 FTE for personal research in the successful candidate’s primary department. Second, we will align our research, corporate engagement, and tech transfer efforts.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position are as follows:

Strategic planning, development, and execution of sponsored programs Develop and implement a strategic vision and associated execution plan to grow and promote the scholarly activity of the college. Interface with research sponsors in federal and state agencies, other governmental entities, industry, private business, and foundations to cultivate mutually productive relationships. Actively identify, promote, and support teams of faculty to successfully compete for internationally recognized and competitively funded research programs addressing societal and technological grand challenges. A keystone priority for this position will be to improve the submission and success rate for major multi-investigator signature awards, e.g., NSF Engineering Research Center, DOD MURI. Coordinate research development training supporting the range of faculty career stages, e.g., early career faculty, diversifying funding portfolios, and pivoting to new areas. Lead the Research Advancement Committee (RAC) and other ad hoc initiatives as needed to effect shared governance and increased synergy between department and college strategic research efforts. Innovation activities Act as a liaison between the college, industry partners, and UF Innovate to develop collaborative research and development and tech transfer initiatives. Develops partnerships with corporations and nonprofits, targeting the development of “triple helix partnerships” that involve government agencies and the pursuit of economic development scale contracts. Encourage and facilitate technology transfer, commercialization, and the licensing of intellectual property developed within the college. Research service offices and programs, which are managed by direct reports to this position. As noted above, following the candidate’s start, the College intends to recruit an assistant dean or director reporting to this position that will help to oversee these functions. Office of Laboratory Safety, which assists the faculty, staff, and students in developing safe research procedures and lab environments; provides leadership for safety programs and coordinates departmental efforts; interfaces with appropriate university safety committees and teams; assists faculty and department chairs in finding appropriate research space for funded activities; oversees renovation and remodeling of lab space; performs regular safety reviews. Office of Facilities Operations, which encompasses planning, design, construction, maintenance, and space reporting for the College’s physical infrastructure. Nanoscale Research Facility (nrf.aux.eng.ufl.edu), which provides access to advanced equipment for materials characterization and fabrication as well as process instrumentation, technical expertise, and services to UF faculty, staff, and students. UF Training Reactor (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UF_Training_Reactor), which enables students to learn the fundamentals of nuclear operation, neutron detection, and reactor physics. Engineering IT Support (www.it.eng.ufl.edu), which oversees the College’s IT security, procurement, software, and hardware maintenance, (web) services, and telephony systems. Compliance and oversight Sponsored Programs. Supports the Executive Director for Finance & Administration in the oversight of research administration of grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements. Responsibilities include limited and internal competitions, structuring and negotiating cost sharing, among other approvals. Conflict of Interest. Oversees the outside activity and financial interest disclosure process for HWCOE faculty; provides guidance on resolving conflict of interest issues associated with the faculty member's sponsored research vs. outside employment activities; reviews and approves monitoring plans associated with an approved outside activity. Restricted Research. Oversees the export control program, supporting the UF Research Integrity, Security & Compliance (RISC) to enforce export control training and compliance. Also coordinates with FLARE and other programs conducting classified Research. Responsible Conduct of Research. Assists in resolving compliance issues associated with human subject data (IRB), vertebrate animal studies (IACUC), and research-related fiscal matters. Oversees activities of the centers and institutes in the HWCOE, including annual evaluation and reporting to the UF administration and the Board of Governors. Represents the Dean and the College as required, including serving on the Council of Research Associate Deans (CORAD) and serving as Acting Dean when the leadership is away. Expected Salary:

Salary to commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

• A PhD in engineering or related field.
• Rank of an associate or full professor. Associate professors must clearly demonstrate they are on track to becoming a full professor.

• A productive track record of scholarship, research, and innovation (relative to the candidate’s years of service).
• Demonstrated success in leading externally funded, multi-investigator projects.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, industry, and government partners.
