Associate Dean of Students and Director

Nature of Responsibilities:

Provide leadership and oversight for a campus-wide student case management program that addresses the needs of students who are experiencing significant difficulties related to mental health, physical health, and/or psycho-social adjustment. Provide direct case management services including interventions, referrals, and follow-up services. Work in close collaboration with academic deans, health care providers, Student Affairs colleagues and parents. Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

 

Specific Duties:

Management Responsibilities (35%)

Recruit, train and manage performance of the case managers and graduate student interns.

Develop budget and monitor expenses. Prepare variance and other financial reports as requested and in a timely manner.

Promote and educate the campus community about DukeReach, it’s programs and services

Provide on-going development, monitoring, and improvement of a comprehensive student case management program.

Provide leadership in the coordination of internal and external care and services for individual students at risk.

Facilitate the development, review and implementation of policies, procedures and practices with regard to students at risk. Provide management and oversight of records and files pertaining to students of concern. Ensure that records and data are maintained in accordance with University policies and federal and state regulations.

Prepare annual report and other reports and analyses as requested.

 

Case Management (30%)

Perform all functions of case manager role for assigned cases. Perform psycho/social

evaluation to determine student’s needs. Formulate intervention plans. Contact and collaborate with other University departments to expedite problem resolution. Provide referrals to support services within the University as well as community agencies. Follow up with prior cases to ensure compliance with recommendations. Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records and prepare reports. Assist students with needs including, but not limited to, crisis intervention, referral to community resources, access to medical care including hospitalization and discharge planning.

Contact parents, as necessary to mobilize parental support for the student’s needs.

Provide support and guidance to University colleagues in matters pertaining to case management maintenance and access to records, as appropriate.

 

Program Management (25%)

Oversee all aspects of University-wide DukeReach program including outreach education, training, consultation, and production and distribution of materials to faculty, staff and students.

Serve as a resource, trainer and consultant to faculty, staff and students on recognizing and responding to students at risk and reporting concerns.

 

Other (10%)

Serve on department, division and university committees and task forces as requested, including the Student Behavioral Assessment Team.

Represent the department at campus presentations and professional meetings and conferences.

 

Specific Skills and Competencies:

Ability to work within and assist others in navigating through complex systems

Knowledge and understanding of treatment programs

Familiarity with mental health terminology, including diagnostic categories

Knowledge and understanding of college student development

Knowledge and understanding of student privacy and medical privacy guidelines and regulations

Ability to communicate difficult/sensitive information

General administrative skills related to performance and resource management

 

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum: Master’s degree in education, counseling, social work, public health or related field plus at least six years of post-Master’s experience in education or closely related setting with a demonstrated knowledge of case management systems; experience managing response to crisis situations; experience managing a case management support team and in professional staff supervision.

Education

Work requires analytical, organizational and communication skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires six years experience of student personnel/services, college or university administration, or a related field to acquire skills necessary to manage a major program area within student affairs.  OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
