Job Title Associate Director, Academic Advising Agency Texas A&M International University Department Office of the Provost & VP for Academic Affairs Proposed Minimum Salary $4,875.87 monthly Job Location Laredo, Texas Job Type Staff Job Description Job Summary The Associate Director, Academic Advising, under the direct supervision of the Provost/VPAA, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the university’s proactive advising efforts. This position assists the Provost/VPAA or other appropriate administrators in the overall management and administrative direction of all aspects of an academic advising unit and/or function. Essential Duties and Responsibilities + Leads the strategic planning for assigned areas and assists the Director in developing and implementing the overall departmental strategic plan. + Directs daily activities and provides guidance and direction to staff involved in department services and programs. + Develops and implements training programs and resources for student employees, advisors, and faculty. + Develops marketing strategies to reach faculty and students. + Assists in developing and maintaining an Advisor’s Handbook reflecting common policies and guidelines based on best practices. + Analyzes existing goals and programs and recommends improvements. + Coordinates advising strategies with various campus entities and programs to maximize student success and retention. + Assists the VPAA/Provost in formulating and implementing policies and procedures + Assists with the support, development, implementation, and evaluation of new and continuing programs designed to improve student persistence and success. + Serves on various committees. + Helps to ensure the success of Academic Advising by assisting Provost/VPAA in administration and assessment as needed. + Collaborate with other Associate Directors to leverage cross-functional opportunities. + Other duties as assigned. Additional Responsibilities + Meets regularly with the Provost/VPAA. + Coordinates meetings with college lead advisors. + Coordinates advising efforts (events, fair, informational session, etc.) + Assists the Office of the Provost in reviewing curriculum changes, course schedules, and course mapping. + Attends University Curriculum committee meetings. Minimum Requirements + Education – Master’s degree. + Experience – Seven years related experience in higher education. + Supervisory Experience – a minimum of two years supervisory experience in an academic advising environment. + An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Preferred Education and Experience + A minimum of six years of experience as an academic advisor. + A minimum of five years of supervisory experience in advising. + Experience with assessment as it relates to advising. + Experience with case management/assignment of students to advisors. + Experience with course scheduling. + Experience with catalog review and course mapping. + Experience with creating policies as they relate to advising. + Experience with advising events, fairs, student outreach. + Ability to work individually and in teams across the university and the system. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of: + Word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. + Budget management and strategic planning. + Banner or similar proprietary systems for higher education. Ability to: + Multitask and work cooperatively with others. + Strong verbal and written communication skills. Licensing / Professional Certification – None.
