Cabot has an exciting opportunity for an Associate Director of Business Development & Partnerships to join the Sustainable Solutions Business at our Boston or Billerica offices.


Over the last 3 years, Sustainability has taken a center stage for all stakeholders (investors, regulators, communities, employees, customers). In 2021, Cabot announced our ambition to achieve net zero carbon ambitions by 2050 consistent with the Paris Climate Agreement, identifying decarbonization as a critical pathway for RM and Cabot Corporation as a whole. Sustainable Solutions business was created to capture a new chapter of growth in our businesses. This new role created in the Reinforcement Materials Segment, will lead a team that supports the VP & GM Sustainable Solutions, to set direction and strategy to achieve the global growth and profitability objectives for both sustainable carbon black solutions and the by-products of Cabot’s core manufacturing process.


This Associate Director will drive strategic partnership evaluation and potential projects to support sustainable solutions growth including: complex capital projects with significant long-term strategic and profitability impacts, a portfolio of large capital projects, as well as delivery of fit-for-purpose solutions at the most effective economics in partnership with the global manufacturing organization.


Responsibilities also include recommending project execution path, identifying and negotiating with potential partners and other external funders (including government funding vehicles) and leading a cross functional team able to build and execute the business plan to ensure that all project requirements, deadlines, and schedules are on track including submitting project deliverables, preparing status reports, and establishing effective project communication plans as well as the proper execution of said plans.


This role participates in the current Flexible Work Arrangement/hybrid schedule of remote days and in-office days.

How You Will Make an Impact

Strategic Development and Recommendation of Path Forward
• Assesses available execution paths for key strategic projects
• Ensures that consequences of different execution paths are clear
• Identifies external partner(s) and/or funding sources, including an understanding of possible government funding
• Generates set of options with quantitative support including expected financial outcomes
• Makes clear recommendation of path forward to executive decision makers, including the Executive Committee.
• Proactively advises senior management of progress along the way

 

Partner Negotiation
• Builds relationships with prospective partners (including regulators, suppliers, project co-investors)
• Promotes and demonstrates the Cabot value proposition establishing Cabot as the long-term partner of choice
• Negotiates for the best outcome for Cabot, with a bias towards capital efficiency
• Ensures that outcome allows for operational flexibility for Cabot plants
• Maintains contact with the business leaders to ensure negotiation direction and results are aligned with the overall business strategy.
• Manages and monitors the contract process.

 

Project Management
• Defines, implements and maintain a project management system to effectively manage strategic programs. Facilitates competitive analysis, alternatives analysis to ensure project scope is fit for purpose and aligned with business requirements.
• Coordinates with cross-discipline team members including the engineering project manager to make sure that all parties are on track with project requirements, deadlines, and schedules.
• Meets with project team members to identify and resolve issues.
• Submits project deliverables and ensuring that they adhere to quality standards.
• Prepares status reports by gathering, analyzing, and summarizing relevant information.
• Establishes effective project communication plans and ensuring their execution.
• Facilitates change requests to ensure that all parties are informed of the impacts on schedule and budget.

• Acts in a way that demonstrates that every dollar matters
• Ensures that the path forward is fit-for-purpose
• Works with Cabot global engineering and external resources to clearly understand risk/reward tradeoffs and recommend a balanced approach
• Pushes for a common mindset that the team should be treating investments as though it was their own money
• Communicates frequently to senior management to ensure alignment.

What You Will Bring to Cabot

• Bachelor’s degree, (engineering major preferred) and Master’s degree in Business preferred
• Experience in a complex multi-national company, manufacturing, investment banking or premium strategic consulting companies is preferred
• 8+ years professional experienced in business strategy & execution
• Extensive experience within a business activity preferred (e.g., Financial Management, Operations, Marketing, Project Management, etc.).
• Project Leadership. Ability to take ownership for ensuring the desired outcome and able to mobilize, support and guide the company’s resources toward achieving the objectives of multiple large, complex projects displaying full understanding of interdependencies. Broad / practical knowledge of Project Management methodologies, contracting strategies, best practices, and tools. Ability to provide expert consultation and advice at a senior, global level.
• Influencing Skills: Ability to influence, collaborate with, and gain agreement from others; leverage and obtain resources even without having direct authority
• Complexity Management. Ability to effectively produce results in an environment where there are multiple sources of input, multiple stakeholders and frequently changing situations or events. Demonstrates understanding of relative importance of various issues, recognizing when deeper engagement is needed and when delegation to others is more effective.
• Creative Problem Solving. Appling analytical thinking to identify potential solutions to problems; is able to be innovative in identifying new solutions
• Presentation & Engagement Skills. Ability to effectively engage with the organization (Cabot and customer) in a manner that is timely, relevant and appropriate for the environment. Able to use effective verbal and written communications to manage and resolve difficult events in relationships when necessary.
• Negotiation Skills. Highly skilled in the negotiation process; adapts approach (style flexibility, climate, tactics etc.) to fit the situation; balances assertiveness and empathy while retaining the ability to say “no”; balances the desired position versus the best alternative
• Financial Analysis Skills. The ability to identify, collect, and analyze relevant data and to interpret and synthesize findings and distilling the information what is critical and relevant, interpret and draw conclusions, and provide a high-level synthesis wisdom Able to develop frameworks for how to compile and display data in a compelling fashion to enable decision making.
