The Associate Director of Climate Solutions leads analyses, reviews, and authors work across a diverse portfolio of water and climate policy and planning initiatives. Their projects cover a wide range of topics, including water infrastructure, climate resilience, stormwater planning and flood control, nature-based solutions including green stormwater infrastructure, lead pipe replacement, affordability, environmental justice, equity, and community engagement.
The role combines data analysis, technical assessments, and visualization with a deep understanding of environmental policy to transform information and experiences into actionable insights and recommendations. Additionally, this position collaborates with external partners on regional and national projects that integrate engineering, policy, planning, implementation, monitoring, and analysis across various environmental, social, and economic challenges.
This position reports to the Senior Director of CIS’s Advisory Services.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Conduct research and lead report writing for client projects and partners, including work with federal and state agencies, local and regional governments, community-based organizations, non-profit organizations and universities, and other groups.
+ Ability to review and understand technical assessments using hydrology/hydraulics models and design for storm sewer infrastructure.
+ Analyze data to identify trends, opportunities, and challenges. Understand metric interdependencies and present actionable recommendations to leaders.
+ Facilitate information gathering and synthesis of critical policy-related data and information. Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and timeliness.
+ Track and analyze existing and emerging water and climate regulations and programs.
+ Identify and participate in industry working groups, associations, and collaborative networks to stay up-to date, gather industry intel, and share CIS’s work.
+ Develop and manage an extensive network of contacts with water utilities, government agencies, and consulting and nonprofit partners.
+ Work with a supervisor to track and analyze newly published reports, legislation, and other developments.
+ Support the supervisor in communicating our work via reports, presentations, website updates, blog posts, op-eds, and social media posts.
+ Responsible for meeting operations including agenda creation, meeting facilitation, minutes, and follow-up tasks.
+ Other duties as assigned.
What You Will Need:
+ Motivation to serve underserved communities
+ Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, Planning, Policy, Community Development, or related field. Graduate degree and/or Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
+ Ten or more years of experience in any of the following areas: municipal water utility management, state or federal level water policy, construction management, community engagement on water services, or related areas. Please highlight any experience working with underserved communities.
+ Past experience in advisory/consulting companies.
+ Experience analyzing and interpreting data to make recommendations and drive business decisions.
+ Demonstrable analytical ability to interpret and analyze data, identify trends, and use data to connect operational and administrative activities to overall business strategies.
+ Ability to present information and provide concise explanations to internal and external audiences with varying levels of policy acumen.
+ Proven abilities as a project manager and possessing the necessary skills to successfully manage projects, including the ability to mentor interns, properly schedule deliverables, budgeting, and developing a comfortable rapport with clients, team members, and external partners.
+ Excellent interpersonal, writing, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with management and cross functional teams and establish collaborative relationships internally and externally.
+ Flexible attitude with respect to work assignments and ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic and matrixed environment.
+ Ability to take personal responsibility for the quality and timeliness of work and achieve results with little oversight.
+ Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint is required.
+ Experience using data analysis and visualization software like Stata, R, Python, or ArcGIS preferred.
+ Valid driver’s license required.
Position Location Requirements
Although our preference is to hire in the following metro areas: Ann Arbor or Chicago, we will consider strong candidates that are remote. The candidate is expected to join in-person meetings as required and should anticipate approximately 20% travel time throughout the year.

The pay range for this position is $100k to $140k, however, both base pay and job title offered may vary depending on skills, experience, job-related knowledge, and location. This position is also eligible for a discretionary performance incentive of up to 20% of base salary.
