The primary function of the Associate Director, Environmental Health and Safety will be to create a strategic partnership with department leaders to assist in identifying workplace safety and health risks and implementing control measures that align with site and corporate initiatives. The Associate Director is responsible for knowing, interpreting, and appropriately applying all applicable federal, state, and local laws, statutes and regulations.

Essential job duties

Audit the Environmental, Health, and Safety programs. Complete and oversee Job Hazard Assessments, Accident Investigations, and Hazard Control and Prevention Reports. Track and verify corrective actions. Develop a Safety Internal Audit Checklist to comply with OSHA standards and other guidelines Set up and maintain safety training programs in all applicable safety competency areas. Ensure training is appropriately documented and reviewed for compliance and timeliness. Maintain appropriate written records/ documentation of such training being conducted and reinforced Ensure the facility is prepared to respond to incidents, emergencies, and other unwanted events Oversee hazardous waste program to ensure waste is being disposed of according to all local, state, and federal regulations. Responsible for submitting all required reports and fees associated with hazardous waste disposal Ensure completion of regulatory documents, reports and other recordkeeping requirements, such as accident records, corrective actions, etc. Work closely with site leadership and scientific staff to ensure that appropriate process safety considerations are being made and that practices and procedures are planned and followed. Examples range from providing appropriate PPE to conducting a full safety assessment of projects Oversee the Industrial Hygiene program including assessments, recommendations and employee awareness and training. Provide leadership and guidance to ensure Industrial Hygiene Assessments are conducted, employees are trained, and appropriate engineering controls are in place to reduce risk and overexposure Provide technical support and/or orientation to outside resources or contractors for compliance with safety efforts Participate in and assist with the development of continuous improvement activities and cost savings initiatives Guide and promote safe work performance by developing safety policies, implementing safety campaigns, and training supervisors and employees on EH&S expectations

Education, experience, certification and licensures

·       Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Safety, Industrial Hygiene or related field

·       Minimum 8-10 years’ experience in an industrial setting, preferably pharmaceutical, including 2 years’ experience in a professional management role

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Strong interpersonal skills and leadership characteristics Strong understanding of applicable state and federal and regulatory requirements for safety, hazardous waste and industrial hygiene, the Code of Federal Regulations for Safety, Health and Environment, and the National Fire Code Excellent verbal and written communication skills Ability to effectively communicate with all levels by either written or oral means Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form Knowledge of manufacturing, spreadsheet, and word processing software Ability to review engineering drawings, add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, logarithms, and decimals Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Incumbent may be required to obtain/qualify for and maintain the clearance to wear a respirator at a “class B” level or above following OSHA mandated guidelines.

Pay Range: $114,000 - $143,000

Education, experience, location and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
