Stanford Introductory Studies (SIS), located in the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE), is seeking an Associate Director for the First-Year Requirement, the Civic, Liberal, and Global Education (COLLEGE) program. https://college.stanford.edu/  Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost and Director for SIS, this position has primary responsibility for providing the pedagogic training, support, and professional development for the 30+ postdoctoral lecturers teaching in the COLLEGE program. They serve as an advisor to instructors (lecturers and faculty) on matters related to classroom strategies, student advising, and other related instructional matters.  This position collaborates with SIS senior staff on strategic planning for a possible expansion of the program, budget planning and financial support services for the COLLEGE program. The Associate Director for the First Year Requirement directly supervises the Assistant Director for COLLEGE. This position will advise the Faculty Director and the Associate Vice Provost on curriculum development, co-curricular events, and short- and long-term strategic planning.  

 

In this role, you will:

●        Work with senior leadership to strategically plan for the changes (including the possible expansion) of the first year requirement. This includes collaborating with colleagues in assessment and evaluation to develop reports for internal and external University committees.

●        Lead and oversee the development of the teaching lectureship associated with the first year requirement (COLLEGE) including the pedagogical and professional development of academic staff. This includes creating appropriate training, one-on-one coaching around teaching, and managing the collaborative team-teaching model. Design and oversee the annual, national-level search for the teaching lectureship.

●        Advise faculty-led curriculum steering committees on the development and improvement of the first-year curriculum.  Oversee effective and well-integrated co-curricular events related to the first year requirement.

●        Collaborate with the Associate Vice Provost to develop and manage program operations including expenditures and budgets. Monitor and control expenses to stay within budget.

●        Oversee the outreach strategy for the first-year requirement, including program websites, print publications, and outreach events for students (including the student advisory board).

●        Develop partnerships with other VPUE units and offices across the University that promote effective teaching and learning to achieve SIS goals for undergraduate education.

●        Promote staff culture of collaboration and mutual respect through participation in unit-wide academic and administrative activities.

●         Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks. Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds. Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds. Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others. On-campus mobility.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

●       Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in the area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience.

●       Knowledge of effective student-centered pedagogy

●       Advanced oral, written, and analytical skills

●       Ability to supervise, and direct staff

●       Demonstrated understanding of undergraduate liberal education goals and objectives in the context of a research university

●       Ability to guide faculty in matters relating to student concerns and pedagogy

●       Interpersonal skills demonstrating the ability to work well with colleagues, faculty, students and staff across the University

●       Basic knowledge of managing a budget and developing financial plans

●       Experience with or comfort with learning new technology tools.

The expected pay range for this position is $140,184 to $175,260 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
