General Statement The Montana Medical Laboratory Science (MMLS) Professional Program, housed within the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Montana State University, was developed in 2008 and is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS). The program has been highly successful and has helped to alleviate the critical need for medical laboratory scientists in the state of Montana, especially in rural communities. Each year the program accepts approximately 18 students from Montana State University, the University of Montana, and Montana State University-Billings. In addition, it is affiliated with major hospitals and rural hospitals throughout Montana where students participate in clinical laboratory training. Duties and Responsibilities The MMLS Associate Director will play an integral part in all aspects of this program from application reviews to coordination of clinical site education schedules and courses. This full-time, year-round, position reports directly to the MMLS Program Director, with duties divided between 45% teaching and 55% program administration.


Teaching duties will include: Instruction of courses and labs within the MMLS program typically three courses each term, including summer term and a microbiology course or laboratory for undergraduates. Develop lectures, laboratory classes, and course materials: including laboratory manuals for the summer program. Report grades, update and maintain learning platform for all courses. Participate in student advising. Teach effectively in our university community and be dedicated to helping students from various backgrounds succeed.


Administrative duties will include: Oversight of internship applications and communications associated with the process, communication with clinical sites, and weekly monitoring of each intern’s progress. Collaborate with the Director and other MMLS instructors to maintain the program’s NAACLS accreditation. Assist with advertising the program, advising incoming MLS students, application process for students and selection of students for training. Maintain program information for recruitment purposes and website updates. Coordinate with office accountants to ensure proper billing for off-site students. Move to director position. Coordinate with Teaching Lab Manager as needed to ensure lab materials and equipment purchases and maintained. Participate with the director on recruitment efforts. Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills ASCP Certification as a Laboratory Sciences Generalist. At least 3 years clinical experience in a clinical laboratory. A master’s in laboratory sciences. Demonstrated leadership experience and professional service. Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Experience teaching Medical Laboratory Sciences courses or related undergraduate courses. Position Special Requirements/Additional Information Occasional travel to participating training laboratories across Montana. Must possess a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. (If successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver’s license, must obtain a valid Montana driver’s license within 60 days of hire.)
