Associate Director of Production Editorial, SMP

This role will oversee production editorial staff and ensure quality bookmaking for one or more imprints while production-editing approximately 15-25 original fiction and/or nonfiction titles per year, as well as offset titles. Technical proficiency in MS Word, Acrobat PDF markup tools, and title management systems is required as well as the ability to train others.

What you'll do:

Assess workloads and assign titles to production editors in consultation with the managing editor. Determine, implement, and enforce style guidelines in collaboration with other Production Editorial leadership. Conduct regular performance reviews, assessments, and goal discussions with direct reports. Provide feedback as needed. Hire and train additional staff as needed. Approve time-off requests while maintaining departmental coverage. Review and approve cover/jacket materials before printing; ensure quality is maintained. Act as Production Editor on approximately 5-8 original titles as well as offset titles per season. Communicate with designers/editors/production managers/art department/managing editors/legal department as needed concerning schedules; revisions suggested by copy editors or proofreaders; copyediting, proofreading, and indexing budgets; integration of Legal Department changes. Update progress of projects in various digital tracking systems and provide active projects updates at interdepartmental status meetings.

What you'll bring: 

Background in adult trade fiction and nonfiction including titles of various complexity. Ability to manage a team of production editors, helping them to anticipate problems, troubleshoot solutions, and prioritize. Strong knowledge of grammar and punctuation, including familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style. Meticulous attention to detail; work well under pressure; good oral and verbal communication. Ability to meet deadlines while juggling multiple projects at once. Communicate proactively and tactfully.

Ideal experience/education:

Five to seven years’ experience as a production editor and/or managing editor in adult trade fiction/nonfiction. Copyediting and proofreading at a high level. Technical proficiency in MS Word, Acrobat PDF markup tools, and title management systems as well as the ability to train and mentor others. Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience.

This role will have an annual salary of $75,000 - $85,000.
