Associate Director of Strategy & Operations

Cornell’s David M. Einhorn Center for Community Engagement is jointly overseen by the Vice President for Student & Campus Life and Vice Provost for Engagement and Land-Grant Affairs.

Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Engagement and Land-Grant Affairs advocates for Cornell’s role as the land-grant university for New York state and monitors and collaborates on responses to the governor’s initiatives in higher education and economic development. This Office is responsible for a broad range of relationships and academic programs and initiatives that further Cornell’s public engagement mission globally, locally, and across New York state, where Cornell serves as the state’s land-grant university.

Based in Ithaca, N.Y., the David M. Einhorn Center for Community Engagement builds service and community- engaged learning as a hallmark of the Cornell student experience by empowering students through campus and community collaborations to create a more just and equitable world. The center plays a key role supporting community- engaged learning and public service across the university. The center brings high-impact practices such as, community-engaged learning, and service-oriented programs to students, faculty, and staff while increasing opportunities for partnerships in local, national, and global arenas.

Leveraging the existing strengths of Cornell’s public engagement agenda, the David M. Einhorn Center for Community Engagement presents a new model and direction for higher education – one in which community-engaged learning and service is deeply ingrained, fully institutionalized and effectively taught and implemented. Through this center, students graduating from Cornell will enter the world as educated global citizens who practice respect and empathy; seek collaboration, cooperation and creativity; embrace differences and diversity in all aspects of their personal, professional and civic lives; and are dedicated to working with others to help solve some of the world’s most intractable problems.

   

Reporting to the Einhorn Center’s Executive Director, the Associate Director of Strategy & Operations works to ensure the success of the center’s goals and objectives, partnering with the entire center team of nearly two dozen staff to develop long-range planning, center-wide policies and strategies. The Associate Director will be a visionary administrator with a collaborative and democratic management style that fosters participation and contribution by others. The position will lead the development and implementation of the Einhorn Center’s strategic plan to sustainably integrate community-engaged learning into the Cornell undergraduate student experience. The Associate Director will also oversee all aspects of the center’s day-to-day operations, including core administration, internal grants, data infrastructure, and reporting. To achieve and sustain the work of community-engaged learning at Cornell, the Einhorn Center strives to be a team that embraces continual learning, values its staff, and the expertise that each member brings to the organization. This position will guide Einhorn Center strategies and establish organizational systems that support staff development and improve team functionality, cohesion and effectiveness, modeling the community we strive to create among our collaborators.

This will be an onsite position with 1 day/week of remote flexibility. This is a term-limited position with an expected end date of June 30, 2027. Extension of the term appointment is contingent upon funding, successful performance, and business need. There is no visa sponsorship for this position. 

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with 5-7 years managerial, supervisory, and financial experience or equivalent combination in a similar environment.Strong organizational development leadership experience with the proven ability to facilitate the work of dynamic, engaged and productive teams.Demonstrated intercultural competence and understanding of issues for the public goodDemonstrated strong interpersonal relations and personnel management, with a commitment to support equity and belonging within an organization.Proven experience with supervising staff, managing human resources, grants, data, and developing long-range funding plans based on staffing priorities.Strong organizational, budgetary, and project planning skills and experience that align with the organization’s mission and values.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters’ degree in and/or relevant academic and professional experience in Higher Education Administration, Education, Social Sciences, Community/Non-Profit Development or other relevant experience with organizational leadership/development components.Experience in creating and facilitating organizational change to improve staff ownership of programs and strategies.Demonstrated success in serving in the function of a Team Leader or Project Manager in similarly sized non-profit, government or higher education team.Experience in community engagement and partnerships that cater to both academic and co-curricular initiatives.Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with staff, students, faculty, alumni, community or other interconnected groups.Knowledge of key administrative and knowledge management systems at Cornell, or similar higher education institution.
