About the business unit

The Buildings and Cities Unit (BNC) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross-sector skills across five key Sectors; Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.

Engineering Sciences is the home for Mott MacDonald’s specialist engineering disciplines within the building sector.   
Currently the UK team consists of,

-    Building Physics
-    Fire Engineering
-    Sustainability and Net Zero Carbon


Working directly for our clients and collaboratively with teams across the business, our engineers provide focussed support and technical leadership, delivering an exciting portfolio of work in the public and private sectors.

 

The Engineering Sciences team is growing rapidly and based on recent project wins and the growing climate emergency is looking to hire someone experienced in computational fluid dynamics modelling (CFD), outdoor thermal comfort and climate aware design.  

As the successful candidate you will join an established team of technical specialists and a global community of likeminded experts.

The role is geared towards a candidate who is at a point in their career where they are looking to take on a leadership role and will be motivated to train and develop junior staff. You will have the drive and passion to help us develop buildings and cities which can adapt to our changing climate.  


You will work in a professional environment delivering a varied portfolio of worldclass projects.  Within these projects, your role will be rewarding and varied, and responsibilities will typically include:
-    Working collaboratively with colleagues and clients to develop technical solutions to create climate aware buildings and masterplans.
-    Technical delivery of wind microclimate and outdoor thermal comfort assessments using computational modelling approaches.
-    Coordinating the work done by and supporting the technical development of junior team members
-    Clearly communicate outputs with clients including attendance at design team meetings, presentation of results and writing technical reports. 
-    Managing the successful delivery of projects, including resource and financial management, ensuring the production of deliverables to agreed timelines and budgets.
-    Being client-facing at a senior level, and contributing maintaining client relationships, to provide good prospects and repeat business.  
-    Supporting business development related activities, identifying opportunities / prospects to allow us to prepare / position the team to produce winning proposals.
-    Actively participate in industry committees, contribute to industry standards, and present at technical conferences.  

Although this role seeks to find a candidate who will provide technical leadership, the opportunity exists for the right candidate to broaden their technical skillset across the other Engineering Sciences disciplines.   

 

Candidate specification

Essential – 
-    Demonstrable experience developing climate aware buildings and cities in a range of global climates
-    Experience in the technical delivery of wind microclimate and outdoor thermal comfort assessments, preferably using OpenFOAM; 
-    Experience in a client-facing role, and ability to influence senior level stakeholders;
-    A range of report writing, and visual and verbal presentation techniques; 
-    Ability to work in diverse multidisciplinary teams;
-    Willingness and ability to work on range of projects and scopes;
-    Chartered with a relevant professional body;

 

Desirable – 
It is expected that the successful candidate will bring experience in one or more of the following technical areas, but it is not expected that any candidate will have experience in the full list.
-    Daylight and glare modelling
-    Obtaining and processing climate data
-    Climate change adaptation strategies
-    Climate change mitigation strategies
-    Air Quality modelling
-    Fire and smoke modelling 
-    Proficiency in usage of various CAD software, particularly Rhino

-    Urban heat island modelling
-    Scripting and coding
-    Familiarity with Linux based High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems or HPC on the Cloud.
-    Dynamic thermal modelling
-    Energy modelling
-    Physical wind tunnel testing
