ASSOCIATE LEGAL COUNSEL, SURETY

Reporting Line: AVP, Head of Surety Claims

 

With limited direct supervision of Head of Surety Claims, the Associate Surety Legal Counsel will be directly responsible for handling simple to mid-level complexity surety claims, as well as providing legal advice, transactional support, and surety education to internal Surety Underwriters. The Associate Surety Legal Counsel will also aid Head of Surety Claims in other related tasks and projects as periodically assigned.

 

Key Responsibilities and Duties

 

Independent handling of surety claims matters of a simple to mid-level complexity, in both Contract and Commercial sectors, including identifying all recovery opportunities to mitigate loss. Developing strong working relationships with Surety Underwriting and Operations teams members globally. Providing timely and accurate legal counsel on surety underwriting and business matters including review, drafting, or revising indemnity agreements, bonds, riders, counter-guarantees, international indemnity deeds/agreements, risk participation agreements, reimbursement agreements, letters of credit, intercreditor agreements, and related banking and surety documents with limited supervision by Head of Surety Claims Assisting in preparation and presentation of monthly/quarterly claims reporting functions within the Organization Assisting in the preparation and presentation of periodic educational sessions to internal surety underwriting and operations staff Coordinating with Surety teams globally to ensure alignment on risk, legal and surety underwriting issues. Collaborating with outside counsel and consultants on claim and underwriting matters. Obtaining and maintaining required state adjuster’s licenses. Actively participating in surety industry groups and local surety events.

 

 

Required Qualifications and Skills

 

Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctor from ABA accredited institution Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; 4-7 years of Surety industry legal experience preferably including in-house experience at a Surety Company. Experience with financial institution/banking matters is a plus. Established track record of increasing responsibility related to administration of simple to mid level surety claims matters as well as surety underwriting legal and transactional support preferable with cross-border experience Time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities with strong attention to detail, data and analytics. Experience working with Canada and/or other cross-border underwriting and indemnity matters is preferred Experience in litigation management and coordination with outside legal counsel Ability to work in fast paced, service driven environment Sound interpersonal skills in order to effectively work in a multidisciplinary cross border team environment Strong communication and analytical skills Ability to work independently with limited oversight while understanding when to collaborate with Head of Surety Claims on unique/unfamiliar matters Microsoft Excel/PowerPoint proficiency Proficiency in French is preferred, but not required

Compensation range:

$100,000-$170,000

Placement within the range provided above is based on the individual’s relevant experience, skills for the role, and location. Salary ranges are only one component of our total compensation package.
