Associate Mechanical Engineer
Position Summary:

The University of Dayton, a top-tier Catholic research university, is seeking a talented and driven Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our esteemed UDRI Power & Energy division. This is a remarkable opportunity to be part of a dynamic team that is revolutionizing the energy industry through cutting-edge research and innovative solutions.

This position provides sustaining and digital engineering support for aerospace and vehicle sustainment technologies, with a focus on reverse engineering and lifecycle management of aircraft components and systems. Under the guidance of a senior engineer, this role will support research, evaluation, reverse engineering, design, testing/validation, and digital engineering efforts for aerospace and vehicle hardware. The ideal candidate will:

- Collaborate with client teams to identify, document, and reverse engineer aircraft and vehicle components to support lifecycle management (LCM) activities, service life extension programs (SLEP), and Digital Engineering (DigEng) initiatives.
- Work closely with client engineers to ensure documentation and product conformance with engineering design intent, performance requirements, and sustainment goals.
- Design and optimize mechanical components, including housings, brackets, structural supports, and other aerospace and vehicle hardware, for both traditional and additive manufacturing in compliance with GD&T standards.
- Develop and execute component- and system-level validation and qualification test plans, including analysis of test data and results to ensure product performance and reliability.
- This role primarily supports government clients in aerospace sustainment, but there may also be opportunities to work with commercial sector clients.

Minimum Qualifications:

- BS in Mechanical Engineering (or projected degree award by June 2025)
- Ability to create, read, and interpret models, technical drawings, schematics, and computer generated reports.
- Proficient in SolidWorks 3D CAD modeling software.
- Working knowledge in Excel and other MS Office Suite programs.
- Attention to detail.
- Development and management of large bills of materials
- Prior involvement with projects on government contracts
- Due to requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

- Advanced degree in engineering, business management, or project management
- Training in and/or application of ANSYS
- Training in and/or application of controls and logic design
- 1+ years engineering/technical product design, hardware ownership experience with working knowledge of GD&T standards.
- 1+ years developing military equipment product specifications
- 1+ years engineering support experience with US Air Force
- 1+ years project management experience
- 1+ years MS Access experience
- 2+ years engineering/technical experience supporting vehicles or military support equipment
- 1+ years experience with part optimization and quality improvement
- Coding and scripting (e.g. Matlab, LaTeX, VBA, Java. etc.)
- Demonstrated application with creating and executing component and system level validation and qualification test plans.
- Experience analyzing large sets of maintenance data and identifying equipment and component trends
- Familiar with various manufacturing processes such as casting, NC machining, forging, heat treat, and additive manufacturing for metals and/or plastics.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills, demonstrated at all levels of an organization.
- Self motivated & organized with ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated successful collaboration within a multi disciplinary team.
- Demonstrated problem solving and time management skills.
