Associate Medical Director

The Massachusetts Mental Health Center (MMHC) operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) seeks a full-time board-certified Psychiatrist to serve as the facility Associate Medical Director and to help lead our thriving state operated community outpatient mental health clinic dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality mental health services to the residents of the Commonwealth. Our mission is to improve the mental well-being of our community through evidence-based practices and compassionate care; to train the next generation of mental health professionals dedicated to public psychiatry; and to transform mental health care through innovative research and clinical scholarship.

We are seeking a highly qualified and visionary Associate Medical Director to lead our outpatient clinical team and drive excellence in mental healthcare services. As an affiliate of Harvard Medical School (HMS) through our partnership with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry, an academic appointment will be commensurate with HMS appointment criteria and candidate qualifications. Duties and Responsibilities (These duties are a general summary and are not all inclusive):

Directs psychiatric services in the outpatient clinic by assuming clinical responsibility for the psychiatric care as needed for MMHC clients.Under the guidance of the Medical Director organizes and assigns the Physician and NP Staff to provide efficient and effective patient care at the Center. In collaboration with the Medical Director and Director for Clinic Services provides teaching and supervision to staff in a setting that supports continuing medical education, adherence to professional and ethical standards, collegial interaction, and professional development.Establishes measurable performance expectations (productivity, quality of care, timely completion of medical records and patient care, charting and other administrative duties, etc.), provides supervision, coaching, counseling.Evaluates staff performance and implements corrective measures and if necessary, implements progressive discipline measures in conjunction with the facility Medical Director, Center Director, and vendor.Directly supervises all reporting staff with regular record reviews.Meets with all MMHC outpatient MD’s and NP’s on a regular basis with focus on documentation, appropriate psychopharmacological and clinical interventions.Meets with all direct reports as a group and/or individually at least once per month. Frequency and setting dependent on staff need.Develops a monitoring tool for the above and reports to the Medical Director on a weekly basis regarding clinical and administrative progress/challenges.Assists the facility Medical Director in the recruitment and retention of highly qualified MD and NP staff.Oversees the evaluation, credentialing, and delineation of clinical privileges for all clinical staff.Ensures MD coverage throughout MMHC system of care and provides direct care to clients as necessary. Ensures DOC (Doctor on Call) and COC (clinician on call) coverage for the Center including all outpatient clinic teams.Contributes to furthering the mission of MMHC by working collaboratively with the Medical Director and Center leadership staff in the development of new programming and clinical initiatives.Provides psychiatric consultation and support to the MMHC CM and contract management staff including attending weekly meetings and provide assistance and guidance on an as needed basis.Supervises and trains residents, fellows, and other trainees as assigned in consultation with the associate training directors.Serves on various internal and external committees as assigned.Partners closely with the Medical Director to design, implement, and evaluate projects for system improvement.Performs the duties of the medical director in his/her absence.

Required Qualifications:

Knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of psychiatry.Current and valid registration as a physician under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.Knowledge of the diagnostic and treatment methods and techniques used in psychiatry.Capacity for patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for mental health problems and health promotion.Medical knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical and the cognate sciences (e.g., epidemiological, and social behavioral) and the application of this knowledge to patient care.Knowledge of the types and symptoms of mental and/or emotional disorders.Practice Based learning and Improvement that involves investigation and evaluation of their own patient care, appraisal and assimilation of scientific evidence, and improvements in patient care.Interpersonal and Communication skills that result in effective information and teaming with patients, their families and other health professionals.Professionalism, as manifested through a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, following institutional policies and procedures, adherence to ethical principles, and sensitivity to a diverse patient population.System-Based Practice, through actions which demonstrate an awareness and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care and the ability effectively to call on the system to provide care that is of optimal value.


Preferred Qualifications:

Previous leadership or administrative experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.Strong commitment to patient-centered care and continuous improvement.Strong knowledge of policies, procedures, standards, rules, and regulations governing assigned unit.Knowledge of the types and availability of public or private resources for providing quality care.Understanding of safety practices and procedures followed by agency and unit.Knowledge of newer therapies, interventions, and behavioral techniques.Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.
