CBS News is looking for an Assignment Desk Editor for our New York based National Desk! This Assignment Editor helps facilitate editorial coverage decisions for all shows working directly with the Senior Vice President of Newsgathering, National Editor, Bureau Chiefs and senior producers for CBS Mornings, CBS Evening News, Weekend News, Face the Nation, CBS 24/7, CBS Newspath and CBS News Special Events. They ensure all are aware of national news, and confirm details of those stories of interest, gather news elements, and help to deploy coverage teams as needed. **Responsibilities** + Help coordinate all domestic newsgathering for the network and select top stories to share companywide, including any breaking news worthy of national attention. + On Saturday and Sunday from 4pm to 12am, they will have the solo responsibility of leading all aspects of domestic newsgathering as described above. + Quickly organize and disseminate critical information for air, verifying its accuracy while simultaneously getting interviews and video coverage of the news event. + Optimally manage multiple priorities including both the editorial and logistical components of a story, often on tight deadline. + Constant and timely outreach to media contacts and sources during breaking news events. + Conduct reporting to confirm details by communicating with police/fire departments, emergency services and other agencies via email, cold calls or on social media. **Qualifications** + Familiar with newsgathering and well-informed on current events. + Sharp news judgement and the ability to comb through local, national, and online news sources in addition to CBS News local affiliate. + An excellent eye for gathering and clearing newsworthy and/or shocking video on social media. + Strong writing skills to help compile various editorial notes that inform the organization of news coverage and reporting. + Ability to keep track of segments covered by all news shows to continue monitoring specific threads with the most updated information. + Must be comfortable with working alone and making independent and informed editorial decisions + Be able to make arrangements (including travel) and deploy producers and technicians, etc. as necessary. + Maintain open communication with desk members as well as the SVP of Newsgathering, National Editor and Bureau Chiefs. **Schedule** + Wednesday - Friday: hours will be flexible, depending on the shift coverage needs of our 24/7 operation. + Saturday and Sunday: 4 pm to midnight CBS News and Stations, brings together the power of CBS News, 28 owned television stations in 17 major U.S. markets, the CBS News Streaming Network, CBS News Streaming local platforms, local websites and cbsnews.com, under one umbrella. The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
