Associate Project Scientist

The UCLA Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) invites applications for a position of Associate Project Scientist whose research will focus on computational electromagnetics (EM) and fast numerical methods applied to Earth surface and atmosphere remote sensing applications. The research includes the following activities:
• Develop and optimize the accuracy & computational performance of a 3D full-wave model for scattering from realistic hydrometeors and apply it to precipitation particles of various shapes, size parameters and dielectric composition.
• Calculate single scattering properties of a relevant selection of hydrometeors to improve both ongoing Global Precipitation Measurements (GPM) mission retrieval algorithms, and future microwave precipitation retrievals technologies.
• Develop and validate, in comparison with EM commercial software and measurements, a full-wave model for scattering from vegetated scenes at P and L bands for GNSS-T and Signal of Opportunities (SoOp) Reflectometry applications.
• Analyze a large set of time-series tower-based radar measurements of forests to investigate the effect of changing environmental conditions on microwave backscattering from forests.
• Write research papers and funding proposals, and participate in scientific conferences.
