Associate R&D Process Engineer

The Associate R&D Process Engineer (Applications Engineer) will collaborate with the Polyiso Insulation team to support CCM’s innovation goals. This role is responsible for identifying, validating, and integrating new mechanical and electrical systems associated with product and process technology development. Key responsibilities include working with mechanical and electrical systems, equipment design and specification, procurement, commissioning, and troubleshooting. The engineer will also provide expertise in new product scale-up, plant trials, process troubleshooting, and plant support.

 

The engineer will work closely with CCM’s Central Engineering team, adopting their documentation processes and best practices for project management. A dedicated focus will be required to accelerate innovation prototypes and validate new product developments (NPDs). Sustainability initiatives will also be prioritized, with an emphasis on achieving annual CO2 emissions reduction targets and validating and scaling waste circularity projects.

 

Process technology research will be a vital component of this role, driving innovation to enhance existing processes and contribute to CCM’s intellectual property and trade secrets. The engineer’s expertise in equipment and processes will support capital equipment requests, expedite new product launches, and improve operational KPIs.

 

Strong communication and leadership skills are essential, as this role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, mentoring other engineers, and presenting findings and recommendations to stakeholders and senior leadership. Additionally, the engineer will engage with external suppliers and scientists to establish strategic partnerships across organizations.

 

Normal hours worked will be 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday (40 hours/week). However, certain situations may require extended hours or alternative shifts to support Operations and R&D projects. This role involves approximately 25% travel. During periods of support for multiple projects across manufacturing sites or corporate meetings, travel may extend to up to two weeks per month.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

40% - New Product / Process Development Guide and support the R&D/Innovation team in new product development research and prototype creation. Provide engineering expertise during the planning and execution of plant scale-ups and validation trials. 30% - New Process Technology Research Conduct literature reviews, analyze IP information, and explore technical journals/magazines to generate innovative ideas. Attend trade shows and conferences to stay updated on cutting-edge technologies and advancements. Identify, validate, and integrate new technologies to accelerate NPD and improve manufacturing KPIs. Collaborate with equipment suppliers to enhance existing processes or develop new ones. 20% - Cost Reduction Lead or support transformational projects that directly impact the business’s bottom line. Drive plant projects to improve productivity and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). Support critical Supply Chain initiatives to strengthen contract negotiations and supply security. 10% - Plant Support Assist in troubleshooting and conducting root cause analysis (RCA) for operational issues related to existing processes. Provide training and technical support to plant-level maintenance and operations teams. Support equipment installation and startups associated with capital projects.

Required Skills/Abilities/Knowledge:

Essential Full Performance Knowledge Proficiency in project management fundamentals; PMP certification is a plus. Moderate working knowledge of chemical equipment, including: Mixing and dispersion equipment for thermoset, thermoplastic, and liquid compounds. Small-, pilot-, and plant-scale processing equipment. Batch and continuous manufacturing processes. Familiarity with electric, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Understanding of temperature control systems and related utilities. Knowledge of piping design and instrumentation (P&ID) design principles. Basic comprehension of open/closed control loops (PIDs). Foundational understanding of low-voltage power distribution. Basic proficiency in AutoCAD software. Essential Full Performance Skills Ability to interpret mechanical, electrical, and construction design drawings. Evaluate and analyze component, equipment, or installation proposals. Develop detailed equipment and installation specifications, including RFQs (Request for Quotations). Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software (Autodesk products preferred). Skill in utilizing and interpreting technical data sheets and manuals. Strong problem-solving and analytical comparison skills. Capability for critical thinking and ethical decision-making.

 

Education and Experience:

Education: Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Mechatronics. A Master’s degree is preferred. Experience: Minimum of seven (7) years of industrial/manufacturing experience in a mechanical and/or electrical engineering capacity. Certifications: Project management certification (e.g., PMP) is a plus
