Associate Staff Engineer

We are seeking an **_Associate Staff Engineer_** who will support technical tasks and is assigned to the Energetics Research Group under the Whiting School of Engineering. A primary responsibility of this position will be assisting in the research of the Advanced Engine and Rocket (AERo) Fuels Laboratory.
**Specific Duties & Responsibilities**
+ Assisting in the research of the Advanced Engine and Rocket (AERo) Fuels Laboratory.
+ Data collection and analysis using MATLAB / MS Excel is an essential aspect of the Laboratory.
+ Testing method and procedure development for various chemical, mechanical and electrical test equipment will be performed.
+ Designing of experimental apparatus using engineering principles for fluid flow and electrical heat generation will be performed.
+ Light fabrication duties may include metal tube cutting, bending, assembly of experimental apparatus, and preparation of test articles.
+ Providing technical support to selected working groups of the JANNAF Interagency Propulsion Committee as requested.
+ Identifying and maintaining a network of resource materials, databases, and industry experts to support the WSE Energetics Research Groups’ mission.
+ Maintaining current awareness and participate in knowledge capture exercises through review of relevant literature and participation in industry conferences.
+ Participating in project teams to execute strategic initiatives related to electronic and Internet delivery of the WSE Energetics Research Groups’ products and services.
+ Performing internal and external research in chemical rocket propulsion technology by preparing topical review reports and papers in selected propulsion technology areas, providing authoritative and timely answers, in both verbal and written communications, to technical and bibliographic inquiries from government and industry customer organizations, and effectively use the WSE Energetics Groups’ extensive resource base and personal knowledge.
+ Maintaining awareness of possible new external funding sources.
**Special knowledge, Skills, & Abilities**
+ Experience with 3D CAD software (preferably SolidWorks) and with MatLab or similar data analysis tools, plotting packages.
+ Knowledge of fluid dynamics and heat transfer fundamentals and ability to work in a lab environment.
+ Practical knowledge of rocket propulsion theory and applications; familiarity with materials used in rocket propulsion systems; experience with chemical rocket propulsion system and component design, manufacturing, and testing is highly desirable.
+ Experience with instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
+ Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
+ Proficient in the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office software.
**Physical requirements**
+ Position will require some amount of light manual labor (equipment assembly, light manufacturing).
_Additional Requirements_
+ Some travel required.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical/aerospace/chemical engineering, physics, or chemistry.
+ U.S. Citizenship required due to nature of funding and grants ERG receives. Candidates must possess or be able to obtain a U.S. Government personal security clearance in a reasonable period of time.
