Associate Vice President, Clinical Laboratories
The AVP Clinical Laboratories sets the strategic direction and is responsible for all aspects of ProMedica Laboratory services including Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Laboratory, Outreach, Quality Management System, Process Improvement, Standardization, Regulatory Compliance, Customer Service, and the Courier programs. Is directly responsible for the Core Laboratory (pre- and post-analytic, as well as analytic) and laboratory services business relationships within ProMedica. The AVP maintains effective and collaborative relationships with the executives and laboratory directors across the organization to maximize the success of laboratory and courier services. ACCOUNTABILITIES *All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise* Directs system-level laboratory quality programs, technical and pre-analytic standardization, and process improvement activities. Identifies and prioritizes opportunities to improve service, improve productivity, and reduce expense, eliminate waste, improve quality, and meet regulatory requirements. Ensures high levels of customer service and satisfaction for all ProMedica hospitals and outreach physician clients. Collaborate with the executive management team on strategic planning, positioning, and other planning activities as necessary to keep ahead of industry needs and initiatives. Directs short and long-range planning of areas of control to achieve financial and operational objectives. Establishes, monitors and is accountable for the operating and capital budgets of the ProMedica laboratory and other areas of control. Oversees management of third-party contracts within the laboratory service line. In conjunction with supply chain regularly evaluates contract performance to ensure quality and efficiency of services. Manage supplies in conjunction with Supply Chain based on laboratory forecast and capacity. Responsible for oversight of anatomic pathology services including contracted medical director and physician agreements. Directs recruitment, selection, supervision, discipline, and evaluation of associates within the area of control. Recruits, trains, manages, coaches, and develops subordinate directors, managers, and supervisors. Develops an effective leadership development plan for supervisors and staff. Anticipates changes and maintains appropriate resource levels based on patient and procedure volume trends in alignment with ProMedica strategic initiatives. Interacts with others within the system to inform and gain support of initiatives and operating procedures. Maintains accessibility to, and open communication with physicians and other professional staff to ensure strong working relationships to address needs and concerns, ensuring provider satisfaction with laboratory services. Acts as a liaison, when necessary, with appropriate individuals and departments. Demonstrates a commitment to ongoing staff development by supporting educational programs and training opportunities, including mandatory classes and orientation for new employees. Responsible for maintaining the ProMedica laboratories in good standing with all licensing and accrediting agencies including CAP, TJC, and CLIA. Ensures ProMedica laboratory compliance with established system and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and Infection control standards. Establishes and maintains local, regional, and national networks of professional contacts. Performs other responsibilities as assigned. Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science. Must possess analytical, organizational, interpersonal, communication and leadership skills necessary to ensure the effective delivery of clinical and anatomic laboratory services and courier services. Must have demonstrated ability to effectively lead large groups of laboratory staff within a health system. Must possess excellent time/project management skills and demonstrate ability to coordinate efforts of peers and other laboratory, nursing, administrative and medical staffs. Awareness of emerging trends and technologies in laboratory medicine, as well as changes in reimbursement and healthcare policy. Demonstrated success in collaborating with and engaging pathologists. A minimum of 7 years of previous administrative laboratory leadership experience in an integrated health system with multiple hospitals, outreach laboratory services, and anatomic pathology services. Must be certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS Master’s degree in Business, Healthcare Administration Deep understanding of clinical laboratory operations, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes.
