Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement, the Associate Vice President for Development Strategy and Operations provides oversight across multiple Development program areas including Major Gifts, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Donor Relations, Development Communications and Development Events. This position plays a crucial role in driving the strategic direction of Montclair’s fundraising initiatives and in ensuring the smooth operation of development activities within the University community.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work with the Vice President for Development & Alumni Engagement to develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies aligned with University priorities and revenue targets.

Manage a team of direct reports who oversee Major Gifts, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Donor Relations, Development Communications and Development Events.

Draft operating plans that include tracking of fundraising goals, metrics, volunteer recruitment and management.

Maintain up-to-date case statements as well as cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.

Coordinate with division leadership to ensure priorities align with overall fundraising goals and strategies including with principal, planned and annual giving.

Serve as one of the key liaisons with the University President, Provost, Deans, volunteer leaders, faculty, staff, alumni and other friends of the Montclair State University.

Inspire and motivate the division team to meet (and exceed) their fundraising goals in collaboration with one another and across campus.

Partner with deans, directors and faculty to implement comprehensive engagement and fundraising strategies, which includes identifying and recruiting volunteer leaders.

Collaborate with Advancement Services AVP on all prospect pipeline activity.

Manage internal communications, transparency, coordination, and collaboration among colleagues in University Development and across campus.

Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations and ethical standards in fundraising activities, financial reporting and event execution.

Oversee University and Foundation policies and procedures regarding gift agreements, naming opportunities and fundraising practices.

Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

A minimum eight (8) years of progressively responsible development or related experience in higher education or organizations with a large constituency.

Mission-driven and identifies with the values and goals of Montclair State University.

Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to lead diverse teams and establish and meet goals.

Inspirational and energetic leader with keen sense of internal and external relationship building who can build consensus, agreement, and collaboration.

Excellent communication, interpersonal relations and strategic thinking skills with an ability to speak and write persuasively.

Ability to exercise independent judgment and a high degree of discretion.

Creative, hardworking and committed to successful fundraising.

Demonstrates a high degree of emotional intelligence, diplomacy, and self-awareness. 

Ability to travel and represent the University at select evening and weekend events.

PREFERRED:

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field and/or CFRE certification.

Successful experience in major gift fundraising, with experience in capital campaigns.

Experience with Raiser’s Edge and knowledge of fundraising technologies.

Highly attentive to detail.
