General Statement
The Vice President for Research and Economic Development ( VPRED ) is pleased to announce an internal call for an Associate Vice President for Research ( AVPR ). The AVPR is a dynamic, full-time research leadership and administrative position that serves as a key member of the VPRED leadership team. The AVPR is an advocate for research and creative activity at MSU and a partner in RED’s efforts to actualize a comprehensive research strategy that aligns with MSU’s mission and goals. This is a 3-year renewable appointment.
Duties and Responsibilities
+ Assist the VPRED in establishing and enacting the overall research vision, areas for research growth, and planning of strategic priorities for research.
+ Assist the VPRED with oversight and leadership of MSU research centers and institutes, with a focus and supervisory role for units led by faculty tenured in academic units.
+ Serve as a collaborative member of the VPRED leadership team that includes Research Development, Sponsored Programs, Research Integrity & Compliance, and Economic Development. Oversee the VPRED internal grant programs, including Research Expansion Funds, Scholarship & Creativity, Research Collaboratives, Core facility grants, and Infrastructure and Facilities Improvement grants.
+ Oversee and provide support for the Director of Undergraduate Research and work in partnership with the Graduate School on graduate research opportunities.
+ Serve as the first point of contact for requests for institutional support (required match for grants, bridge funding, and other faculty or unit support).
+ Work with Research Development (RD) leadership and staff on events related to fueling interdisciplinary, inter-departmental, and inter-center/institute collaborations.
+ In partnership with RD leadership, prepare and facilitate teams of faculty pursuing multi-institutional grants, graduate training grants, and center grants; mentor faculty in the pursuit and leadership of significant externally funded efforts.
+ Work in partnership with the Director of Economic Development & Impact on large scale grant development and projects that have an economic development element or focus.
+ Establish and maintain strong and collaborative relationships with departments, Associate Deans for research and Colleges; partners in the Research Alliance; International Programs; and other units that advance MSU research and scholarship.
+ Represent MSU at national research conferences relevant to MSU’s research priorities.
+ Represent the VPRED as needed in leadership discussions, meetings, and events.
+ Attend daily VPRED leadership meetings, weekly AVP meetings, monthly Center/Institute director meetings and Research Council meetings; prepare reports for stakeholders as appropriate; have a daily presence in the VPRED office.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ Must be a current Tenured faculty member or Research Professor at Montana State University Bozeman.
+ History of sustained excellence in research and scholarship.
+ Experience with large institutional grant development and project execution.
+ Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
+ Demonstrated interest in and experience with collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
+ Willingness to pursue institutional (vs. individual) research priorities.
+ Demonstrated success as a member of a team.
+ Leadership experience.
