Basic Job Functions
The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Security oversee s the day-to-day operation s of the Security department and is responsible for the direct oversight programs relate d to the physical security of the New York Botanical Garden and required public and visitor experience services . The AVP is responsible for assisting in the department ’ s direction and planning by developing initiatives and delivering measurable results . They will be responsible for the hiring, development, and retention of appropriate management and security personnel in order to foster an open and welcoming environment for more than 1 million visitors each year including employees, students , members, guests and VIPs . The AVP will also be required to engage and work interdepartmentally across the institution and foster external relationships with NYPD, NYFD, Bronx Park Detail , and other emergency response agencies .
Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) initiatives and actively helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
+ Proven ability to lead and develop a team
+ Manage multiple tasks with ability to manage multiple priorities, complex situations, and a diverse team .
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate to management in a timely manner about recommendation s and changing conditions.
+ Helps to ensure the safety and security of all stakeholders through development, implementation, evaluation and enforcement of security programs, policies, and guidelines.
+ Directs and implements the overall day-to-day operations of the security department ’s programs and initiatives
+ Oversee staff scheduling, performance assessment and management, participates in selection and disciplinary activities to enforce Garden policies.
+ Oversees investigations involving criminal activities, complaints, and other security incidents .
+ Works under the direction of the VP of Public Safety & Security, and NYBG leadership to define the strategic direction for advancing the d epartment’s programs and initiatives to promote consistent and compliant service delivery.
+ In collaboration with the VP, establishes security and public safety protocols, policies, and procedures. Conducts ongoing review of existing policies and standard operating procedures to identify gaps or discrepancies and process improvement initiatives, implementing revisions, as necessary.
+ Compiles and reviews security data and presents key findings to the V P of Safety & Security , making recommendations for methods of prevention , enforcement , and improvement .
Qualifications
+ A minimum of 1 0 years in security management experience or a minimum of 2 0 years in law enforcement , with preference for experience in a position equivalent to a lieutenant or higher
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate in a timely manner any changes or recommendations that could have impact on our service image or brand
+ Must be a NYS Licensed Security Officer
+ Broad knowledge of safety procedures, access control, physical security, and security management.
+ Must be able to pass any N.Y. City or State-required training or other qualifications for licensing
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
Ability to move up to 30 lbs., stand for extended periods of time, work outdoors and in all kinds of weather.
Baseline Work Schedule:
9am-6pm Tuesday- Saturday. Ability to work a flexible schedule with some weekends and holidays when necessary.

Salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $135,000-$155,000.
