Purpose of Position

Use hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products.

Tasks and Responsibilities Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools such as measuring devices, clamping devices, grinders, and sanders. Operate machining equipment such as metal lathe, vertical mill, drill press, and horizontal and vertical band saws. Recognize, set up, and operate welding equipment such as a GMAW and GTAW welders and Oxy-Acetylene torches. Weld non-critical components in the flat, vertical, and overhead position. Layout, position, aligns and secures parts and assemblies prior to assembly using straightedges, combination squares, dial calipers, levels, and rulers. Assist welders in the shop in parts preparation and fixturing for weldments fabricated and assembled. Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding. Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors. Other duties as assigned.
