GENERAL SUMMARY

The Assistant Director Nursing serves as the administrative resource lead within the department for interpretation and implementation of policies and procedures for the department. He/She will collaborate with the department Director of Nursing to direct and assist staff in problem resolution and daily department management of one of our two care units—the Norwalk Memorial Home (NMH) or our Transitional Care Unit (TCU).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assists in development, implementation and evaluation of ongoing service programs that ensure quality nursing and patient care consistent with the hospital mission.

Assists to monitor and maintain unit compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies as well as Hospital policies for patient services, and environmental and personnel safety.

Collaborates with the Director of Nursing (DON) to oversee unit Performance Improvement programs that monitor and evaluate critical aspects of care.

Assesses need for personal growth and development and takes the initiative in seeking opportunities to meet this need. Takes pride in his/her performance and ownership for the ongoing improvement of the department.

Accurately identifies real or potential problems affecting service and implements solutions with follow-through and communication.

Shares responsibility with the DON for effective communication horizontally and vertically within the organization. Communicates with patients and families.

Stays connected with staff needs and practices by working one 12-hour shift per week as part of her/his routine duties.

May also perform work of a higher level in preparation for increased responsibility and may be required to do work of lesser responsibility with the work-load demands of the department.

Manages human resources to assure quality services and promote positive employee relations.     

Coaches immediate subordinates providing feedback; constructive critique of work; facilitates the development of their problem solving and decision making skills; and documents their job performance annually. 

Completes all duties, responsibilities, and goals within the expected or agreed to times. This can include but is not limited to tasks such as completing payroll, reports, or scheduling.

Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment.
