Summary THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION THAT REQUIRES MILITARY MEMBERSHIP. This National Guard position is for a AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC, Position Description Number PDD1562P01 and is part of the Mississippi Air National Guard. Responsibilities As a AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC, WG-5823-10, you will maintain, repair, and modify various types of motor vehicles, both gasoline and diesel powered, to include heavy and low speed operated vehicles. This position is located in the Vehicle Maintenance Section of an ANG Combat Communications unit. MAJOR DUTIES: 1. Inspects general condition of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles to determine overall vehicle condition, cause of malfunction or need for repair. Diagnoses malfunctions by visual or auditory examination methods. Uses complex test equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters and pressure gauges to determine exact nature or extent of repairs or adjustments necessary. Isolates malfunction cause using systematic vehicle analysis. Troubleshoots, inspects, tests and analyzes vehicle computer/electrical control systems, mechanical and hydraulic systems, lubricating, cooling, air conditioning and exhaust systems, engine electrical systems, engine fuel-air systems, electronic/pneumatic controlled automatic transmission and differentials, power dividers, power trains, brakes, steering and suspension systems. Operates general and special purpose vehicles, base maintenance and materials handling equipment, as required to support the unit mission. 2. Performs required repair of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles as assigned, using independent judgment and own initiative on the repair work. Performs Time Compliance Technical Orders (TCTOs) including scheduled and special inspections. Determines when and how far major components should be torn down; what parts and mechanisms can be reworked, refitted, or replaced with new parts and the type, extent and alignment required, using technical orders, commercial manuals or local directives. Removes, rebuilds, repairs, replaces vehicle system components. Adjusts and overhauls engine mechanical systems, state of the art systems, electrical, air conditioning, fuel-air, emission control, power trains, gear reduction systems, electronic/pneumatic controlled automatic transmissions, differentials, power dividers and brakes, steering and suspension system components. Performs operational driving tests to determine serviceability. 3. Performs body repair and corrosion control; repaints and refinishes surfaces as required. Repairs and/or replaces body parts, locks, glass, etc., and determines if additional repairs are required. Uses welding equipment, power tools, hand tools and other specialized equipment. Cleans, tests and repairs radiators/oil coolers and associated parts. Incumbent replaces or repairs tires and tubes and balances wheels. 4. Prepares, maintains and submits maintenance work orders for man-hour and data collection accounting. Records work performed or delayed and parts or maintenance required. Assists in review and maintenance of technical orders, operating instructions, commercial publications, Major Command (MAJCOM) and local publications, as well as other pertinent directives. Assists in establishing and maintaining adequate bench and special stock support levels and appropriate tools and equipment. Uses and maintains shop equipment. Researches or assists in requisitioning materials, parts and equipment necessary to perform the vehicle maintenance/management mission 5. Participates as On-the-Job Training (OJT) instructor in the vehicle maintenance area. Conducts instructional classes on methods and procedures of operation and maintenance concerning all aspects of vehicles and assigned shop maintenance support equipment. Evaluates effectiveness of instruction, maintains individual and section training and qualification records in the Air Force automated information system (AIS) of record. Plans and schedules tasks and training activities for drill status guard members. Trains assigned drill status guardsmen on the maintenance, repair, and modification of various types of motor vehicles, both gasoline and diesel powered. Develops, establishes and maintains work center training programs to train drill status guard members in mission critical tasks. Conducts unit wide training in environmental issues including Hazardous Communication (HAZCOM), Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) and other environmental related areas. Carries out various duties in support of mobilization readiness of section assigned personnel and equipment. Assists in conducting the local occupational safety and health training program, to include compliance with directives and procedures for proper disposal of hazardous waste products. 6. Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements Conditions of Employment Military Grades: E4-E6 Participation in direct deposit is mandatory. For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT & NOTES: 1. Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position. 2. This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position. 3. Wear of the military uniform is MANDATORY. Qualifications NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. MILITARY MEMBERS WITH BONUSES: Upon acceptance of a military technician position military members who are currently receiving a military Reenlistment/Extension Bonus (REB) or GI Bill-SR Kicker may lose incentive eligibility and may be subject to termination or suspension of incentive (includes indefinite and temporary technicians on assignment for more than 180 days in any continuous 12-month period). GENERAL EXPERIENCE :Must have experience or training performing a variety of complex automotive maintenance procedures without assistance. Experience which demonstrates knowledge and use of a wide variety of test and measuring instruments in identifying the need for repair and adjustment or in checking the tolerance and fit specifications of repaired components and assemblies. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have 18 months of experience or training diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying more complex vehicles, equipment, and more complicated systems. Experience which has provided a thorough knowledge of diagnostic equipment. Experience applying independent judgment in determining methods and techniques required to solve unusually complex maintenance and repair problems. Experienced in testing, inspecting, and evaluating the work performed on vehicles, equipment and systems.
