AUTOMOTIVE WORKER

The primary purpose of this position is to maintain and repair combustion-powered automotive vehicles, over-the-road trucks, and comparable vehicles including their engines and other mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic control systems and to assist and instruct patrons of the Skills Development Center in planning and carrying out automotive repair. Responsibilities - Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, adjusting, and cleaning defective parts or components such as spark plugs, fan belts, generators, starters, carburetors, fuel and water pumps, mufflers, tail pipes, wheel bearings, brakes, radiators, engine components, and heating and cooling devices. Replaces complete assemblies such as removing a damaged engine and replacing it with a new engine. - Performs scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles to restore automotive equipment to a serviceable condition. - Provides instruction and assistance to patrons in the less complex phases of automotive repairs. - Determines type and quantity of merchandise to be stocked in the retail outlet, sells items to customers, and provides cost estimates. Accountable for funds control and the collection of fees. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing. - Uses and maintains hand and power tools and equipment required to accomplish duties of automotive worker. Prepares accurate, complete, and up-to-date records of actions taken and assures documentation is signed and coordinated. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5800-Transportation/Mobile Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of equipment common to the trade, i.e., front-end alignment and wheel balancing equipment, turning and grinding equipment for servicing brake drums and discs or rotor assemblies, and drilling and pressure bleeding devices. 2. Knowledge of technical practices in order to remove, replace, clean, and install a variety of parts, components, and accessories such as wheel cylinders, universal joints, springs, shock absorbers, catalytic converters, clutch assemblies, mufflers, etc. 3. Knowledge of safety regulations, procedures, and policies to include environmental directives pertaining to handling hazardous materials. 4. Skill in the use of measuring instruments and test equipment such as test lamps, timing lights, tachometers, multimeters, and dwell meters. 5. Skill in using basic tools common to the occupation, i.e., wrenches, screwdrivers, insulated pliers, electric drills, pneumatic wrenches, and soldering irons. 6. Skill in locating improperly functioning parts for repair or replacement. Ability to maintain and repair, combustion-powered automotive vehicles, over-the-road trucks, and comparable vehicles without more than normal supervision. Ability to read schematics and interpret manufacturers' repair manuals. Ability to instruct and assist patrons in the less complex phases of automotive repairs. Ability to determine type, quality, and quantity of merchandise to be stocked in a retail automotive center. Physical Effort: Work requires standing, stooping, bending, stretching, crawling under vehicles, and working in tight spaces or tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally lifts items 50 pounds or more with mechanical devices or with assistance from other workers. Working Conditions: Usually works indoors on concrete surfaces, exposed to drafts, noise, and auto fumes. Continually exposed to dirt, dust, grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. Occasionally works outside under adverse weather conditions. Required to follow prescribed safety procedures and may be required to use safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, and respirators. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
