Auxiliary Operator

Based in Tracy CA, the Auxiliary Operator will provide support for the project fleet consisting of four facilities: Tracy Power Project, a 330 MW combined cycle plant located in Tracy; Henrietta Peaker Plant, a 96 MW simple cycle plant located in Lemoore, CA; Hanford Peaker Plant, a 97 MW simple cycle plant located in Hanford, CA, and the Malaga Power Facility, a 96 MW simple cycle plant located in Malaga, CA.

Opportunity Summary

The Auxiliary Operator (AO) assists with start-up, shutdown, and normal operations of plant systems, including operating auxiliary apparatus and performing water chemistry analysis. This role involves executing tasks from the Control Room Operator, conducting equipment inspections, and aiding maintenance personnel to ensure safe and efficient operations.

The AO will be required to occasionally travel to other California plant locations in Hanford, Henrietta and Fresno as needed to provide back-up support.

Primary Functions

Assist in the start-up, shutdown, and normal operations of power plant systems. Operate major auxiliary apparatus such as air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler feedwater treatment systems, wastewater systems, generator cooling systems, boiler feedwater and condensate systems, and locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment. Perform operating tests and inspections and make minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment to achieve proper operating conditions. Execute orders from the Control Room Operator at isolated panels for clearing equipment or making it ready for service in accordance with operating instructions and procedures; clear, tag, test, and safety tape these operations. Perform routine water chemistry analysis and operate continuous emissions monitoring equipment. Maintain assigned logs. Report any abnormal or irregular conditions that develop during the progress of work and take corrective measures within the scope of operating instructions. Assist maintenance personnel during maintenance periods. Complete other tasks as required by the Control Room Operator or the Operations Supervisor.

Working Relationships

The AO reports to the Operations Manager and periodically receives work direction from the Control Room Operator.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

The AO will occasionally be required to travel to other California plant locations in Hanford, Henrietta and Fresno as needed to provide back-up support.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Initial starting compensation will range from $30 to $37 per hour.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Associate degree in Power Plant Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Process Technology, or a related field; or equivalent technical training in industrial maintenance or instrumentation and control would be advantageous but is not required. Some experience in power plant operations and industry is desirable but not required. Experience in water chemistry control, analysis of water conditions, water treatment facility operations, and chemical handling requirements is preferred but not necessary. Theoretical and/or practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and inspection/recording of plant parameters is desirable but not mandatory. Understanding electrical systems, including high-voltage safety protocols and basic electrical theory, can be crucial, especially when dealing with generator cooling systems and locally controlled electrical equipment. Proficiency in mechanical systems, including pumps, compressors, and turbines, is often necessary for maintenance and troubleshooting tasks. Familiarity with piping and instrument schematics and process controls is beneficial but not essential. Familiarity with safety regulations and certifications, such as OSHA or NFPA, can be critical, particularly in hazardous environments. Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
