Auxiliary Operator

The Harquahala Generating Company operates a state-of-the-art combined cycle power plant in Tonopah, AZ. This 1092 MW facility is equipped with three Siemens SGT6-6000G natural-gas combined cycle units, making it a significant contributor to the local energy grid. General Summary

The Auxiliary Operator is responsible for assisting the Operations Manager or Lead Operations Technician, receiving guidance from the Control Room Operator, and actively participating in the operation and maintenance of power plant equipment. This includes performing preventive and routine maintenance, managing inventory, and supporting emergency operations. Additionally, the role involves actively contributing to safety and regulatory compliance programs and assisting the Maintenance Team as required.

Primary Functions

Work as assigned by the Operations Manager or Lead Operations Technician. Based on those assignments, obtain direct guidance from the Control Room Operator. Assist with operations of the equipment and monitor operational parameters, ensuring reliably and continuous operability of equipment. Operate and maintain a wide variety of power plant equipment. Maintain operations of chemical pumping system ensuring optimal chemistry control and equipment reliability. Assist with maintenance activities to included mechanical work, instrumentation and electrical repair activities. Perform or assist with, depending on the level of complexity, preventive maintenance actions. Perform or assist with, depending on the level of complexity, planned maintenance (PM) and routine repairs to damaged or malfunctioning equipment. Withdraw parts and supplies from inventory and complete usage reports to report such withdrawals to the plant's inventory control system. Assist in physical inventories. Work around and repair rotating equipment, chemical systems and water processing equipment. Perform or assist with chemical handling and offloads. Perform emergency operations and maintenance to maintain production and safeguard facility equipment. Obtain direction from other team members to effect changes in plant conditions and chemistry. Actively supports the Maintenance Team in the execution of maintenance plans, by providing support (Lockout/Tagout), equipment identification, troubleshooting, work request preparation, or other areas as needed). Fully support and participate in NAES Safety and Regulatory Compliance Programs. Complete other tasks as requested.

Working Relationships

The Auxiliary Plant Operator reports to the Operations Manager and takes direction from the Lead Operations Technician or Control Room Operator depending on assigned duties.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

The position entails a 12-hour rotating modified Dupont schedule. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Starting compensation is $38 to $45 per hour.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Associate Degree in a technical field desirable. Experience in a power plant environment or relative military background is desired, preferably as a Power Plant or Water Plant Technician or equivalent civilian or military position. Experience working with high-pressure turbines, gas fired boilers and familiarity with associated equipment. Strong aptitude in math, mechanical/electrical ability desired. and chemical handling requirements is required. Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion turbine operations, industrial safety, hazardous waste management and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable. Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls desirable. Mechanical, instrumentation and electrical equipment knowledge is desired. Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
