Auxiliary Operator

Sandy Creek is a 900-megawatt coal-fired power plant located in Riesel, Texas. Consisting of one IHI supercritical pulverized coal boiler, one Toshiba steam turbine generator and Alstom air-quality control systems equipment, it is one of the largest coal plants in the U.S., able to generate electricity for more than 900,000 Texas homes and businesses. The plant utilizes Powder River Basin coal.

Opportunity Summary

The Auxiliary Operator (AO) is responsible for monitoring the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis. The AO responds to alarms by taking appropriate corrective actions and executes plant start-up and shut down procedures as required. The AO ensures that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner. The AO is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, testing, inspection, and maintenance of all equipment related to an electrical generation plant.

Primary Duties

Adhere to all safety procedures, including lock-out/tag-out and the use of personal protective equipment. Ensure safe operation of equipment, aiming to minimize risk to personnel and equipment. Operate and maintain plant equipment at maximum operating efficiency. Increase plant profitability by eliminating waste and maintaining high productivity. Conduct necessary maintenance activities. Write and maintain equipment logs, operational logs, and other required reports in a clear and professional manner. Read, understand, and respond to written instructions and logbook notations. Maintain accurate readings, records, and reports. Participate in daily preventative and corrective maintenance activities in a safe, effective, and timely manner. Assist with plant clean-up and housekeeping activities as required. Understand and follow regulatory requirements. Establish good working relationships with teammates, team leaders, project technical experts, and engineers. Operate station vehicles such as forklifts, trucks, overhead cranes, and mobile cranes. Review instruction manuals and develop troubleshooting procedures for equipment. Demonstrate the ability to use plant drawings, blueprints, and manuals. Demonstrate knowledge of equipment layout and plant systems. Report upset conditions or other anomalies in plant status to the Shift Supervisor. Make entries in the Operating Log and approve and issue Tag outs as required. Receive and respond to orders and requests from electrical, steam, and fuel dispatchers. Perform emergency operations to maintain electric service and safeguard station equipment. Provide information to the CRO to effect changes in plant conditions and chemistry. Perform routine equipment rounds and inspections in compliance with established operating procedures. Execute other duties as required.

Working Relationships

The Auxiliary Operator reports to the Shift Supervisor and may also give information to maintenance personnel on matters pertaining to project operations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

This position offers a 12-hour rotating shift schedule. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and project conditions.

Compensation

The initial starting hourly rate of pay will range from $32.00 to $36.00 per hour, with eligibility for an annual bonus based on individual and plant performance.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment. An Associate Degree in a technical field is desirable. Experience in a power plant environment is desired, preferably as an Auxiliary Operator or an equivalent position. Knowledge of power plant equipment, such as motors, pumps, boilers, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, cooling towers, pollution control equipment, and AC and DC electrical distribution and control systems. Basic knowledge and ability to understand fundamental principles of physics, mathematics, AC and DC electrical theory, heat transfer and fluid flow, thermodynamics, and chemistry. Ability to read and comprehend mechanical and electrical drawings, P&IDs, single line diagrams, schematics, and logic diagrams. Knowledge of power plant safety procedures, especially in areas such as chemical handling, high-energy systems, confined spaces, incipient fire suppression, first aid, rotating machinery, and heavy equipment operation. Knowledge of power plant systems and maintenance functions as they relate to plant operations. Ability to operate valves, switches, controls, keyboards, and other devices associated with power plant and material handling equipment. Ability to use basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, basic rigging such as winches, hoists, and slings, and implements such as lances, shovels, and pry bars. Ability to understand and apply plant procedures. Ability to recognize hazards, anticipate accidents, and implement corrective measures and policies to avoid them. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications), GPi Learning Module, and CMMS MP2 Module. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License at all times.
