Auxiliary Plant Operator

Situated in Odessa, Texas, Quail Run stands as a strategically positioned 4 x 2 combined cycle natural gas facility, thoughtfully situated in proximity to the Waha natural gas supply basin. The facility comprises cutting-edge General Electric 7EA combustion turbine generators, seamlessly integrated with natural gas-fired heat recovery steam generators and high-efficiency condensing steam turbine-generators.

Opportunity Summary

The Auxiliary Plant Operator is responsible for assisting in the operation of power plant systems. This position entails active participation in start-up, shutdown, and routine operations of various plant systems, including critical auxiliary apparatus such as air compressors, circulating water systems, and generator cooling systems. Performing tests, inspections, and minor equipment repairs to maintain optimal operating conditions is a fundamental aspect of this role. The Auxiliary Operator collaborates closely with the Control Room Operator, Operations Manager, and maintenance personnel to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the power plant.

Primary Functions

Assist in power plant system start-up, shutdown, and normal operations. Operate major auxiliary equipment, including air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler feedwater treatment systems, wastewater systems, generator cooling systems, boiler feedwater and condensate systems, and various locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment. Perform operating tests and inspections, and make minor equipment repairs and adjustments to ensure proper operating conditions. Execute orders from the Control Room Operator at isolated panels, clearing equipment or preparing it for service following operating instructions and procedures. This includes clearing, tagging, testing, and applying safety measures. Conduct routine water chemistry analysis and operate continuous emissions monitoring equipment. Maintain logs as assigned and promptly report any abnormal or irregular conditions that may arise during work, taking corrective actions within the scope of operating instructions. Provide assistance to maintenance personnel during maintenance periods and fulfill other tasks as directed by the Control Room Operator or the Operations Manager.

Working Relationships

The Auxiliary Plant Operator reports to the Operations Manager and takes direction from the Plant Manager or Control Room Operator depending on assigned duties.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 lbs. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Outside working conditions may require exposure to both cold and hot weather conditions for extended periods. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility. 

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

The work schedule consists of a 12-hour rotating shift spanning from Thursday through Wednesday, followed by a seven-day off-duty period. This schedule results in a total of 48 hours worked in one week and 36 hours worked in the following week during each pay period. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

The initial hourly rate of pay will range from $26.30 to $36.78 per hour based on qualifications and experience.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. An Associate Degree in a technical field is desirable. Experience at a gas turbine/combined cycle power plant, along with the advanced skills and previous training to qualify as a Control Room Operator at an accelerated rate. Working knowledge of the power plant industry is desirable. Experience in water chemistry control, analysis of water conditions, water treatment facility operations, and chemical handling requirements is required. Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable. Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls is desirable. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times.
