Avionics Software Engineering Architect - Rocket Engines

The Engine Avionics Software Engineering Architect is responsible for multi-disciplinary end-to-end software design, and a primary interface to stakeholders for multidisciplinary topics. You will lead the design, development, and verification of avionics software components for Blue Origin's rocket engines. Your contributions will impact the suite of Blue Origin engine avionics, working from conceptualization through operational flight. This role involves leading technical reviews, mentorship, developing best practices, and developing technology roadmaps for software development.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership: Lead and/or support technical reviews, ensuring design meets system and performance requirements

Cross-company Collaboration: Foster cross-company technical collaborations, aligning multi-disciplinary teams towards common goals

Mentorship and Advisement: Provide mentorship and support to engineering teams, enhancing their technical skills and reinforcing effective methodologies

Process Standardization: Drive the standardization of Engines Avionics processes and design/analysis tools for software development to ensure consistent and high-quality products

Architecture Design: Design and lead the collaborative development of an end-to-end architecture that details how architectural elements are developed, constructed, deployed, and maintained

Performance Assessments: Assess system performance against current and future mission CONOPS, managing performance and risk across multiple engine programs

Trade Studies: Perform detailed trade studies, ensuring mission perspective and analysis are integrated into trade criteria

Functional Management Collaboration: Collaborate with functional management to align project goals with broader organizational objectives

Technology Roadmap: Develop and maintain technology roadmaps for software development, ensuring alignment with long-term strategic goals

Goal Setting & Metrics: Establish goals and metrics to identify opportunities to deliver customer solutions on or below cost, performance, and schedule requirements

Program Lifecycle Focal: Serve as the Avionics Software single threaded technical leader throughout the program lifecycle, championing the conceptual vision

Gate Reviews & Optimization: Conduct gate reviews, optimize performance, and resolve issues to ensure software robustness and scalability

Minimum Qualifications:

B.S. degree or higher in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, aerospace, or related field

8+ years of hands-on experience planning, developing, and testing real-time embedded avionics software or engine controller software, such as: bare metal, RTOS

Deep understanding of computer science fundamentals, algorithms, and common data structures, with strong debugging skills at the software/hardware boundary

Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex systems to a diverse set of consumers

Expertise in software architecture and design patterns

Proven track record of delivering high-quality software products on time and within budget

Broad expertise across the system development lifecycle, including requirements, design, analysis, build, verification, and test

Experience with C/C++, Python, serial communications, and networking protocols (eg., TCP/IP)

Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion. 

Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.  
 

Desired Qualifications:

Master’s degree in aerospace, software, electrical, systems engineering, or related technical field

12+ years of hands-on experience planning, developing, and testing real-time embedded avionics software or engine controller software, such as: bare metal, RTOS

Experience in design/dev/testing of safety critical software systems for aerospace, medical device, automotive, or other safety critical industries.

Experience with Rust

Strong project management skills, including planning, monitoring, and reporting


 

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $170,805.00-$239,127.00

Other site ranges may differ
