AVP Data Science - Insurance Operations - General Motors Insurance
Overview Why General Motors Insurance Data Analytics? Responsibilities The AVP of Data Science for Insurance Operations will be responsible for the success of data science and machine learning solutions across pricing, underwriting, product operations, and claims operations. You will be responsible for identifying the highest-impact solutions in collaboration with domain experts across the company and building alignment to a set of priorities. You will build a strong network of leaders across GM and its affiliates that you influence and support to better GMIC, GM Financial and GM. You will use your excellent communication skills to share your vision for data science and insurance operations with senior leaders to shape the future of GMIC. You will lead a team of data scientists to break large initiatives down into achievable challenges with quantitative success criteria; to design and develop data science solutions; and to deploy, measure, and improve them in production. You will be a hands-on technical leader capable of leading by example and guiding the team in using advanced statistical, machine learning, and data processing techniques. You will hold the team accountable for measuring the impact of their work and achieving objectives and key results for GMIC. You will rethink how insurance products bring value to customers by pushing the boundaries of how data science can improve our products and operations. About the role Lead the Insurance Operations Data Science team responsible for data science solutions in pricing, underwriting, product operations, and claims operations. Work with leaders across functions to define company metrics for success in the areas above, and ensure we can properly measure them over time, to create meaningful OKRs. Identify and prioritize the projects that will most positively impact key results in underwriting, product, and claims. Collaborate with Product and Engineering to ensure solutions fit into broader product development and vendor integration roadmaps. Help your team break initiatives down into achievable challenges with quantified success metrics. Drive a culture of excellence within the team through coaching and leading by example. Continue to develop technical knowledge and help the team find cutting-edge solutions to challenges using advanced statistical and machine learning techniques. Support a culture of research and creative thinking. Communicate results, progress, and timelines back to leaders and stakeholders to bring clarity to what your team has accomplished, why it matters to the success of GMIC, and what comes next. Help build out the vision of data science at GMIC and shape the team strategy for achieving this vision while staying lean. Support the people on your team with guidance and mentoring on career progression, professional development, and how to win together. Qualifications What makes you a dream candidate? Strong quantitative, analytical and data interpretation skills with a solid foundation of mathematics, probability and statistics. Advanced quantitative degree required with at least seven years of experience in industry data science roles. Experience leading data science teams, with evidence of delivering impactful results across a portfolio of projects. Maintained working skills in some combination of SQL, Python, R, Spark, and other common data science software languages. Strong knowledge of engineering practices that pertain to data science, such as version control, CI/CD, model deployment, and model monitoring. Proficiency in experimental design and using behavioral design in tandem with data science. Deep understanding of the various aspects of insurance product and claims operations, along with experience building models such as for bind, underwriting, pricing, retention, and claims FNOL. Takes an ownership mentality to the business and always pushes for continuous improvement with a relentless commitment to our customers. Stays up to speed on many competing and intertwined initiatives and maintains clarity of purpose. Ability to be curious in all aspects of the business and your role, and continuously learn. Willing to be bold and make forward looking investments in the success of the team and GMIC. Ability to identify and understand business issues and map these issues into quantitative questions. Exceptional communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences. Ability to guide technical data scientists and challenge them on subtle details of their methodologies. Willing to go the extra mile as a manager with frequent check-ins, valuable feedback, and rigorous performance management. Inspires the team through strong leadership, coaching, and mentoring. At GM Financial, we strive for transparency in all aspects of our business, including pay equity. This is the GM Financial pay range for this role and job level. The exact salary and compensation will vary based on factors like knowledge, skills, experience, and education. This role is eligible to participate in a performance-based incentive plan. Full time employees are eligible to participate in health benefits on day one of employment.
