Beginning Farmer Program Educator - Binghamton, NY
The Beginning Farmer Program Educator is responsible for the programmatic direction and coordination of agricultural programs that support new, beginning, and aspiring farmers in Broome County. This includes support and technical assistance through farmland and enterprise assessments, business planning and other educational initiatives, connections to resources, and creating a support network for beginning farmers in the county. Additionally, the role will focus on building connections with stakeholders in the community who also support beginning farmers, including but not limited to, Broome County Farm Bureau, USDA agencies such as the Farm Service Agency and Soil & Water Conservation Districts, the Small Business Development Center, and financial partners, such as Farm Credit East. Programmatic efforts will include assistance with program development, delivery and evaluation. This individual represents Cornell Cooperative Extension’s programs to the public, community leaders, government officials and Cornell University as part of program delivery. The hourly rate for this position is $21.00. POSITION INFORMATION: Required Qualifications: + Bachelor’s Degree in agricultural production, animal science, ag business or related field or equivalent education (Associate’s Degree and 2 years of transferrable program/functional experience). + Experience in agricultural production, ag business, or animal sciences education and outreach. + Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. + Basic skills in the use of modern electronic technology and software (e.g., video, audio, computers, Microsoft Office Programs, social media, internet and database software, etc.). + Ability to utilize Canva to design effective marketing and outreach materials. + Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels and educational tools. + Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate. + Ability to teach informal educational programs. + Ability to effectively participate in professional team efforts. + Ability to plan and organize individual work responsibilities according to priorities developed with other team members and the immediate supervisor. + Ability to utilize program resources within the community. + Knowledge of diverse audiences (including at-risk audiences) and local communities. + Ability to frequently carry supplies and equipment, climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation. + Ability to read English and interpret documents such instructions, safety and procedure manuals. + Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. + Ability to speak effectively with external customers and employees. Preferred Qualifications: + Previous experience in working with, or supporting, beginning farmers. + Coursework in adult education highly preferred. Responsibilities/Essential Functions: Program Responsibilities: Program Delivery, Evaluation and Applied Research - 80% + Apply subject matter knowledge to create innovative lesson plans to deliver educational programs in the areas of Agriculture and Food Systems, focused on supporting new and beginning farmers, including but not limited to business and marketing management practices, farmland site assessment, and enterprise evaluation. + Conduct on-farm consultations of new and aspiring farmers. + Promote learning and funding opportunities offered through the Cornell Cooperative Extension system. + Conduct educational learning opportunities for new, beginning, and aspiring farmers in partnership with CCE Broome Ag & Food Systems Team. + Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities as part of program delivery. + Implement program evaluation with input and feedback to reflect goals of the program. + Based on program parameters, interpret evaluation data to the constituencies. + May assist in applying subject matter knowledge to evaluate educational program. + Communicate evaluation results and findings. + Interact with various constituencies to obtain their evaluation of programs. + Assist in analyzing collected program evaluation data. + Make recommendations for improvements based on participant feedback. Administrative Responsibilities: Direction and Management - 5% + Demonstrate judgment and discretion to independently solve problems and resolve conflicts that arise in the Program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures, as needed. + Ensure program activities conform to the Statewide Plan of Work. + In partnership with the supervisor, effectively allocate program resources to accomplish Association program objectives. + Monitor the Program income/expenses to ensure spending is within budget constraints. Coordination/Operation - 10% + Create and maintain contact database of beginning and aspiring farmers. + Organize, promote and conduct educational farm tours. + Create marketing materials and provide guidance on effective marketing strategies for programs to target audience. + This position may require the transport of program participants and/or program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities. Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5% + In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities. + Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
