Safely operate assigned truck or ancillary equipment on route to deliver or remove solid waste. When not on assigned route, educate, train and orient new Drivers and current employees on procedures for proper inspection, defensive driving, and safe operation of vehicles for collection, transport, and disposal of solid waste.
Key Responsibilities:
Driving Duties:
Operate truck and on-board hydraulic systems to deliver and remove solid waste.Complete pre-trip and post-trip safety lane inspections and reports, daily truck report, route sheets and other documentation requested by supervisor daily.Keep truck and tools in good working condition by communicating mechanical problems to supervisor immediately.Operate truck and equipment using prescribed techniques to eliminate driver-induced mechanical failures.Maintain route quality standards as predetermined by management.Follow all safety standards, equipment checks, and precautions in the performance of all duties. Comply with all federal, state, local and company rules on safety and vehicle operation.Maintain clean vehicle by cleaning cab interior and exterior of vehicle.Training Duties:
Educate, train and orient new Drivers on procedures inspection and safe operation of vehicles for collection, transport, and disposal of solid waste.Provides defensive driving training to new and current employees.Evaluates driving skills of driver candidates by conducting In-Cab and Ride Along Observations.Increases the level of Driver proficiency through training and effective communication.Provides retraining for drivers following preventable accidents.Assist management in implementation of new programs and ways to improve the program.Ensure training records are maintained and administers appropriate tests to determine Drivers’ proficiency in company procedures and defensive driving.Execute appropriate instructional methods per management.Assist management in the development of training material.Additional Responsibilities:
Conform in all respects with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, and other orders and to all company policies, procedures and directives from supervisors.Ensure that all required personal protective equipment be always worn (i.e., gloves, reflective vest, safety glasses, work boots, etc.).Report all accidents or incidents to supervisor(s) immediately.Exhibit a professional demeanor, manner, and appearance always (i.e., meeting customers and/or the general public while on route or in uniform).Maintain accurate records of services performed.May work closely with supervisor to improve routing efficiencies.May be required to work overtime.Attend all safety and branch meetings.Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED.Must not have had an accident or injury in the last yearPossess Current and valid CDL license.Minimum of three (3) years of commercial driving experience.Minimum of one (1) year driving in the Solid Waste Industry.Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies:
Ability to operate any vehicle or equipment necessary to perform job.Ability to communicate in writing and verbally with others.Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and apply to job.Ability to write simple reports and correspondence such as pre- and post-trip inspections, accident reports, daily paperwork, etc.Ability to read and comprehend simple correspondence and instructions such as company policies and procedures, etc.Ability to apply common sense reasoning to carry out uninvolved written and/or oral instructions and to solve general problems.Ability to follow instructions and work under limited supervision.Physical/Mental Demands:
Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus due to the constant maneuvering of vehicle in tight and high traffic areas.Ability to regularly lift/move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds. Occasionally move/push up to 300 pounds.Sitting is required 75% of the time due to the primary function of driving.Ability to work in usually loud conditions.Working Conditions:
Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, rainy/stormy, extreme hot and cold weather conditions (depending on season), moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particlesWork in an outdoor environment up to 100% of the time.Works route away from branch location on a continuous basis throughout the day. Occasionally work in high precarious places.Work in motor vehicle traffic conditions constantly.
