Summary This position is located in Resource Stewardship and Science, in the Resource Stewardship and Science Division. The purpose of the position is to perform a wide variety of complex biological science technical support functions. Open to the first 50 applicants or until 02/04/2025 whichever comes first. Responsibilities The major duties of the Biological Science Technician include, but are not limited to, the following: Assists with all aspects of water and vegetation monitoring field work including the assisting with the planning, management and implementation. Uses database applications to enter, manage and review field data. Works with geographic information systems (GIS) to manage and query spatial data. Performs the required quality assurance/quality control procedures on field data to ensure accuracy. Oversees the work of lower graded technicians, volunteers, and interns, and provides guidance on field and office safety. Operates field equipment used during monitorng activities such as field computers, water monitoring probes, continuous monitoring sondes and discharge meters. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/04/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: performing vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys as part of a monitoring team in remote natural settings or urban parks; participating in site rehabilitation through soil preparation, native seed dispersal, live planting and weeding; applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, chemical, and/or bio-control methods in planned management of exotics (non-natives), native species, and/or weeds, etc. . You must include hours per week worked. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: performing vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys as part of a monitoring team in remote natural settings or urban parks; participating in site rehabilitation through soil preparation, native seed dispersal, live planting and weeding; applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, chemical, and/or bio-control methods in planned management of exotics (non-natives), native species, and/or weeds, etc. Researching and compiling botanical data AND knowledge of identifying target non-native, invasive and native plant species -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate education that is directly related to the position. You must include transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
