Title: Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician 1

Location: Brook Army Medical Center (San Antonio, TX)

Education: Graduate of a military BMET Course or a higher education degree from an accredited college in BMET or Engineering.

Clearance: Public Trust Clearance or above preferred. A Public Trust Clearance is not required day one but will be processed and therefore must be a US Citizen able to obtain a clearance.

Summary:

The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards for BMETs and levels of qualifications shall be applied to this position.  Under general technical oversight, shall repair, calibrate, and maintain all types of basic clinical equipment technologies, devices, instruments, and systems.  Inspect, install, repair, prepare for disposition, and provide SPM of general clinical MDE.

 

Possess and apply basic knowledge for MDE in one or more of the following modalities:  Healthcare Imaging (Radiology), Laboratory, Sterilization, Patient Monitoring, Operating Room Services, Dental, Pharmacy, Respiratory Services, Scopes, Pulmonary, Anesthesia, Veterinary, and High-End Electronics.

 

 Evaluate, install, maintain, diagnose, repair, calibrate, and test MDE, including high risk and life support MDE. This shall include complex Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved MDE to include but not limited to standalone MDE and/or components that contain integrated circuitry (designed along an event and where the patient becomes part of the circuit), microprocessors, pneumatic, electro-mechanical, and mechanical MDE, such as dental MDE, sterilizers, low capacity radiographic (x-ray) MDE, electrical beds, basic laboratory equipment, defibrillators, ventilators, and infusion pumps.

 

Conduct SPM of MDE which includes visual inspections, calibration, and performance verification. SPM are performed using written test procedures.  Interpretation of SPM results to determine whether equipment is safe and operating within manufacturer’s specifications.  Annotate and maintain detailed documentation of inspections, preventative maintenance, and calibrations.

 

Schedule and oversee third party SPM and repairs, as necessary, of MDE. CP not authorized to obligate Government funds.

 

Recommends SPM intervals and procedures based on manufacturer’s guidance, command policies, industry standards and operational needs.

 

Conducts initial inspections of new MDE, ensuring parts and accessories are present and MDE is functional for patient use.

 

Documents the results of inspections using Government provided forms and presents findings to Government personnel. Official acceptance will be by Government.    

 

Provides assistance to other BMETs, BES and clinical staff on safe use, application, testing, and SPM and repair of all types of clinical equipment technologies and systems, as needed.

 

Be on an on-call status for a period of seven (7) days (placed on the on-call roster after a period of six months after employment); CP shall have a working phoneline during an on-call status. The on-call personnel shall have phone readily available during this period and callback required for emergencies and/or deliverables after hours (bed deliveries).

 

Requirements:

Education/Experience. Graduate of a military BMET Course or a higher education degree from an accredited college in BMET or Engineering.

6 months experience in the repair and maintenance of MDE (six months of internship shall be considered).

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and ability to apply electronic circuitry and technical aspects of the operation, repair and maintenance of electronic MDE. Repair electronic, pneumatic, electro-mechanical and mechanical MDE to include troubleshooting, identifying source of problem(s), replacement of defective printed circuit board(s), discrete component(s), or other parts as appropriate.Knowledge of how external forces (e.g., other devices with which it may be interconnected, geographical and climatic conditions, interference from other electronic equipment) may affect the adequate functioning of electronic devices.Knowledge and skill in using standard Microsoft operating systems, Microsoft Office suite of products for Office Automation, and administrative and clinical software products currently in use at BAMC.Knowledge of current regulatory requirements.Knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.Knowledge of color code conventions used in component and wiring marking.Ability to analyze, repair, and test electronic and electromechanical MDE.Ability to perform preventive maintenance inspections.Ability to run diagnostic programs.Ability to maintain accurate records of repairs, calibration, and tests.Understand and comply with TJC and other applicable standards and regulations.Ability to lift up to 50 pounds of MDE and TMDE; to push/pull equipment carts; to kneel, stand, bend, and reach during MDE repair and SPM.Skill in testing electronic equipment.Skill in manual dexterity, hand-to-eye coordination, and color vision.Skilled in effective communications, verbally and in writing, accurately and completely document MDE SPM and unscheduled services.   Able to communicate with clinical staff and provide assistance in service training.
