Biophysics Investigator
Glaxosmithkline
Site Name: USA - Pennsylvania - Upper Providence Posted Date: Dec 13 2024 We are seeking a highly motivated and creative individual to join our Structural & Biophysical Sciences team. The aim of this role is to apply and evolve a suite of biophysical techniques in support of decisions throughout the drug discovery process. Our transnational department combines structural biology and biophysics to understand and optimize interactions between drug targets and small molecule hits, leads, and candidates in support of drug discovery across all therapeutic areas under investigation at GSK. The successful applicant will collaborate broadly with multidisciplinary project teams consisting of biochemists, biologists, medicinal chemists, and computational chemists to discover and optimize novel therapeutics. Key responsibilities: Generate and deliver impactful biophysical data and insight to characterize biomolecular interactions and provide discovery teams with detailed interaction analyses (i.e., protein-compound, protein-protein, and protein-nucleic acid). Interact with business partners including therapeutic-area focused research units, structural biologists, medicinal chemists, and counterpart technology groups. Liaise and consult as a biophysics representative to project teams. Design, evaluate, and appropriately scale biophysical experiments in support of large interdisciplinary and transnational project teams. Develop and deploy protein interaction experiments using a subset of available biophysical methods such as SPR, MST, thermal shift methods, HDX-MS, native MS, mass photometry and NMR to characterize and measure binding of small molecule hits and leads to drug targets purified from recombinant expression or extracted from complex matrices such as lysates. Carefully design and conduct experiments to deconvolute biophysical mechanisms of active compounds and antibodies to help predict efficacy and pharmacology, understand residence time, and select the best molecule for progression towards the clinic. Propose, plan, and execute laboratory experiments and advanced data analysis in alignment with the goals of interdisciplinary project and technology teams. Evaluate, implement, and embed cutting-edge biophysical technologies that provide novel information content or advanced capabilities on multi-component systems to positively impact project success-rates or timelines. Why You? Basic Qualifications: We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals: PhD in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Structural Biology, Chemical Biology, or related scientific discipline, or master’s degree with 5+ years of relevant industry experience. 4+ years laboratory experience in quantitative biophysical techniques, and knowledge of structural biology, biochemistry, and protein characterization. Scientific contributions documented with peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and/or patents. Preferred Qualifications: If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus: Strong, independent research background in quantitative protein biophysics: i.e., experience measuring binding affinity, kinetics, or thermodynamics of protein interactions. Modeling of biophysical mechanisms and data fitting. Deep knowledge of one or more of the following techniques: SPR, structural mass spectrometry, HDX-MS, native mass spectrometry, NMR, or fluorescence-based binding assays. Experience with quantitative characterization of multi-component systems or target engagement in complex systems. Experience with programming/scripting in R, Python, or other programming languages for advanced data processing and analysis. 2+ years postdoctoral experience with strong track record of publications. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise and to influence multidisciplinary drug discovery teams using robust scientific data. Demonstrated strengths in high performance behaviors, such as building relationships, flexible thinking, and enabling/driving change. #LI-GSK Please visit GSK US Benefits Summary to learn more about the comprehensive benefits program GSK offers US employees.
