The Health Policy & Equity Section at the Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Center for Outcomes Research at BIDMC is seeking a Biostatistician I. The Smith Center (Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Center for Outcomes Research (bidmc.org)) is devoted to addressing the most pressing issues in cardiovascular care through innovative and rigorous analysis of diverse data sources, including large national registries, administrative claims data, survey-based data, and EHR data. The Biostatistician I will engage in a variety of collaborative research projects working closely with clinician investigators, fellow statisticians, administrative staff, and trainees in the nationally recognized Section for Health Policy and Equity Research. As a Biostatistician I you will have a key role in helping to produce high-impact research.
The Biostatistician II will carry out select data management and analytic activities for a variety of projects in support of the Health Policy & Equity Section at the Smith Center for Outcomes Research under the direction of Dr. Rishi Wadhera. In addition to traditional biostatistical methods (e.g., regression, propensity score approaches, survival analyses), prior experience with administrative (Medicare) claims data is preferred. Additional preferred qualifications include SAS Base and Advanced certification, hands-on experience working with SAS (Base, Stat, Macro, SQL), and domain knowledge in at least one of the following areas: causal inference, longitudinal analysis, or weighting methods.
The Health Policy & Equity Section research combines the use of real-world data with advanced statistical, econometric, and epidemiological methods to answer questions related to healthcare access, quality and value, and population health, with a focus on cardiovascular outcomes. In addition, this research explores how state and federal health policies impact care delivery, clinical outcomes, and health equity. Research in this section is funded primarily by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Heart Association, and other extramural sources. The Health Policy & Equity Section regularly produces and publishes research in high-impact journals such as JAMA, NEJM.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

Assist in the design and management of data storage using Access, Excel and other relevant data management systems.

Using SAS and other relevant statistical software, create analytic files by merging multiple, large databases including Medicare, and other complex claims-based data to meet the analysis goals.

Carry out and conduct statistical analyses of large and small databases using SAS, SUDAAN and other related statistical software.

Create tables and figures that accurately reflect the results of the analysis

Serve as a resource and help answer programming questions for Division's trainees (Research Fellows, Research Students) and Research Staff at the discretion of the Principal Investigator.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required in Statistics, Computer Science or Public Health; Master's degree preferred.

1-3 years related work experience required.

Proficient in running SAS statistical analysis procedures required. Understanding of statistical concepts and SAS procedures; familiarity with epidemiological and quality assurance principles.

Prior research experience required.

Must be able to create analytic files by merging multiple, large databases; formatting; recording; and sub setting data to meet the analysis goals. Must be able to create tables and figures that accurately reflect the results of the analysis.

Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with SUDAAN and STATA preferred.

Physical Nature of the Job:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move throughout the hospital campus.
