PRN, Nights

Job Summary

Performs waived and moderate complexity testing according to CLIA ‘88 guidelines in one or all of the following fields within the Clinical Laboratory: Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation and Microbiology.  Also performs high complexity testing under the supervision of the department supervisor or a Medical Technologist.  May perform QC and QA as assigned by the supervisor after competency is demonstrated.  Duties also include certain clerical tasks and related laboratory services.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
 

The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job.  He or she may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.

1. Performs and interprets technical procedures in assigned departments according to approved policies and procedures within established turn around times.

2. Maintains required documentation in accordance with guidelines established by regulatory agencies and according to laboratory policy.

3. Performs testing and records test results correctly either manually or in the computer system.

4. Reviews and checks work in accordance with laboratory policy.

5. Communicates to physicians, nurses and other hospital staff any lab critical values according to policy.

6. Performs all automated and manual test procedures according to the procedure manual.

7. Reports results within established turn-around-times.

8. Demonstrates the ability to analyze quality control on all tests performed for accuracy. Records the results and notifies the supervisor of any results outside of the established goals.

9. Demonstrates the ability to perform preventative maintenance and start-up procedures for instruments in the laboratory.

10. Monitors and receives supplies into the department according to established procedures, storing them appropriately. Notifies supervisor whenever the level of supplies appears to be low.

11. Notifies supervisor whenever the level of supplies appears to be low.

12. Follows all safety and infection control policies.

13. Participates in continuing education each year.

14. Performs at an acceptable pace to ensure the prompt reporting of accurate patient results.

15. Exhibits a professional image using positive interpersonal skills.

16. Demonstrates good judgment.

17. Annually completes competency validation, mandatory safety programs and OSHA requirements.

18. Maintains good rapport with co-workers, nurses, physicians, patients and their families.

19. Demonstrates understanding of all policies and procedures or asks appropriate questions.

20. Effectively utilizes knowledge.

21. Participates in Laboratory Quality Assurance programs

22. Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required:
 

A minimum of a two-year diploma or equivalent in any biological science or chemical science from an accredited/approved educational institution and successful completion of the Medical Laboratory Technology training program which includes Blood Banking (Immunohematology), Chemistry, Hematology, and Microbiology; OR A minimum of a two-year diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology which includes Blood Banking (Immunohematology), Chemistry, Hematology, and Microbiology.  

Certification as an MLT by the ASCP or AMT within 6 months of hire.
