Versar Global Solutions’ Environmental Management Service Area has a national reputation for high quality consulting in freshwater, estuarine, marine, and terrestrial environments. The Columbia Office’s natural resources professional staff work within an informal, interactive research atmosphere that provides opportunity for individual growth and advancement. Projects are supported by an array of corporate resources including field sampling equipment, boats, biological laboratories, statistical analysis and GIS tools, and document production facilities. Versar Global Solutions, in Columbia, MD, is seeking a Jr. Boat Captain / Estuarine Scientist with strong data collection and analysis skills, who works well as a member of a team, and enjoys technical and scientific challenges.

What You’ll Do:

This position mainly provides support to marine benthic ecology and fisheries monitoring programs but may also provide support to a variety of other projects, including but not limited to, freshwater streams, watershed modeling, and water quality analyses. The scope of project activity within the Environmental Management Service Area ranges from designing and implementing field studies to complex ecosystem impact assessment and resource management.

What You’ll Bring:

Technical training and experience necessary to fulfill the duties of this position includes the following: Ability to operate marine vessels (23’+) Ability to trailer and maintain marine vessels (23’+) Ability to lead and effectively coordinate with multiple teams and agenciesExperience in the collection, sampling, and assessment of marine and estuarine benthic macroinvertebratesExperience in the sampling and identification of marine and estuarine fishes and invertebrates along coastal regions of the Mid-Atlantic BightExperience in the use of multiparameter water quality instrumentation (YSI, Hydrolab)Data collection, compilation, review, and analysisBenthic sediment analysisBackground in natural resources, environmental science, or biological sciencesExtended overnight travel during the field season (July 1st through September 30)

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 2 years’ experience navigating and trailering marine vessels (23’+)Extensive experience navigating the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, Maryland Coastal Bays, and inland watersCandidates should provide details of on-water experience leading and operating vessels while conducting sampling and monitoring activitiesExcellent organizational skills, requiredGood oral and written communication skills Ability to work on multiple projects in a multi-disciplinary team settingThe qualified candidate should be able to lift up to 50 pounds, work outside in adverse weather conditions, and be available for local overnight or extended work travel trips. Candidate may be required to work nights or weekends for sampling efforts.Successful candidates must be flexible self-starters able to creatively solve problems, capable of good internal and external client interactions, able to meet deadlines, and able to assist in development of new projects.Must be proficient in English, both written and verbal, to ensure effective communication and collaboration.Successful results of preemployment screenings, including federal background check, MVR, and drug screen.Comply with company drug and alcohol policy.Be authorized to work in the US or will be authorized by the successful candidate’s start date.

Preferred Qualifications (full-time may be considered if preferred qualifications are met)

Master’s degree and two years’ experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 4 years’ experience in a relevant discipline of biological or environmental scienceKnowledge and experience with biological benthic sample collection methodologiesKnowledge of fish and invertebrates common to the estuaries and coastal embayment between Delaware and GeorgiaExperience in technical writingProficiency with data analysis and management (Microsoft Access and Excel)

Compensation 

Expected Salary: $26/hr - $32/hr

Location Requirements

The position will primarily work onsite in MD.
