Holtec International and its subsidiary companies are designing an unfailingly safe and secure source of clean energy using nuclear fission, called the SMR-300 small modular reactor, which will be initially sited at the Palisades site in Michigan, USA. Holtec is a global turnkey supplier of equipment and systems for nuclear, solar, geothermal, and fossil power generation sectors of the energy industry.

The SMR-300 project provides an exciting opportunity to work alongside innovative engineers focused on developing the next generation light water reactor to be deployed around the world. This role will coordinate and direct work activities within Holtec and its subcontractors for siting activities and balance of plant structures, systems, and components. This role is tasked with enabling siting, environmental evaluations, and design development through a mix of project management and applied engineering with a focus on conduct of engineering, project management processes, management of requirements, and project delivery. Specific Areas of Responsibility:
The Project Engineer will support the development and delivery of the balance of plant structures, systems, and components by applying leadership and project management principles. The Engineer will be tasked with a diverse set of responsibilities from project schedule management to engineering action items resolution. The Engineer’s job is to ensure high quality, timely, and practical delivery of Balance of Plant structures, systems, and components. Areas of responsibility include: Support the engineering conduct and oversight of balance of plant systems, including the turbine generator and auxiliaries, cooling water systems, utility systems, and other mechanical systems.Develop, track, assign, and complete project action items addressing technical, commercial, and logistical areas.Develop criteria and standards to perform engineering development, project coordination, and quality assurance. Complete research and technical paper development to inform design decisions.Review, comment, and manage subcontractor development schedules, procedures, and engineering products, including coordinating with other team resources and cross-team needs to achieve objectives.Prepare internal work authorizations (scope, resource estimate and schedule). Prepare and deliver technical presentations to internal and external organizations. Support development and review of equipment design criteria, specifications, sizing, code compliance, and material selection. Frequent engagement with world-wide subcontractors is expected. Inform system and component design integration between the balance of plant and nuclear island structures, systems, and components. Closely coordinate with the Nuclear Island engineering teams to resolve interfaces, common issues, and achieve design objectives.Support development of equipment specifications for Balance of Plant equipment, components, and major subcontracts. Support and perform bidding processes with the supply chain to identify potential equipment and components, perform evaluations, and ultimately select specific equipment and components for application to SMR-300 by coordinating with other staff engineers. Support development and maturation of the SMR-300 capital cost and operating cost estimates.Engage with subcontractors and fabrication staff to ensure the constructability and fabricability of major structures and equipment. Minimum Requirements:1 to 7 years of experience in engineering, project management, or construction applications, including within naval nuclear applicationsBachelor’s Degree in a related Engineering application or 10+ years equivalent experienceAbility to plan and organize work tasks and meet deadlinesEffective communication, organizational and interpersonal skillsExcellent attention to detail and capable of producing error-free documentsStrong problem-solving and computer skillsDemonstrated experience with project management principles, such as schedule, cost, and quality managementEligible to work in accord with Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810Desirable Additional Qualifications:Demonstrated experience with balance of plant systems, including steam, water, air, electric, and waste heat systems.
