Breast Ultrasound Technologist

I.SUMMARY OF POSITION PURPOSE

The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for performing breast ultrasound procedures on patients of every age utilizing approved techniques and producing quality scans for physician interpretation.

II. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties:

Reviews medical record for patient history and clinical data for correlation with sonogram. Positions patient, explains procedure, and provides patient education Performs ultrasound procedures on patients of every age utilizing approved protocol. Displays knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy, pathology, and/or physiological data to obtain optimal studies. Assumes care for physical and psychological needs of patients during procedure. Selects technical factors and imaging mode. Evaluates sonogram for technical quality and prepares for physician interpretation. Practices aseptic technique as necessary and/or universal precautions. Operates ultrasound equipment and monitors function of equipment. Recognizes malfunctions and needs for servicing. Takes appropriate steps to report those needs. Maintains patient records. Assists with procedure scheduling as requested. Instructs, supervises,and evaluates students as a part of their education process. lnitiates life-support measure for patient if necessary. Practices universal precautions Operates other equipment / devices as appropriate. Assists physician with ultrasound procedures. Properly cleans transducer after each exam. Properly inspects transducer ports and cords for damage prior to usage. Reports any issues with equipment to the supervisor for repair. Maintains supplies and stocks room daily. Contributes to the achievement of excellence in healthcare by demonstrating a thorough knowledge of the mission and values of AnMed. Demonstrates courteous behavior through polite and respectful communication with all coworkers and guests. Recognizes when others are in need of assistance and consistently offers to help when own workload permits or finds someone who can. Promotes a professional image by adhering to the established dress code. Demonstrates cost-effectiveness in the use of supplies and equipment as indicated by minimum wastage of supplies.

Responsibilities:

Contributes to the time management of the department by being punctual to work and on assignments according to the hospital standards. Demonstrates the importance of wearing employee identification badges. Ensures own health status as demonstrated by timely compliance with all hospital health and safety policies. Demonstrates competency in the use of RlS, PACS and any other information system as required. Understands and adheres to departmental policies and procedures related to specific job function; acts as resource to other staff and new personnel. Participates in professional development by maintaining clinical competency and completes mandatory medical center and departmental reviews.  Maintains continuing education credits as required by governing board. Practices proper body mechanics. Maintains cleanliness in work area. Maintains patient confidentially and is aware of patient rights. Keeps immediate supervisor informed of any unusual concerns. Participates in special projects as requested by supervisor, manager, director and/or radiologist. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

III. EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology or Medical sonography Program

CREDENTIALS: Current ARRT certification and/or Medical Sonography with registry eligibility RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) preferred.

SKILLS: Ability to operate ultrasound equipment and produce quality images. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate with patients, visitors and employees within the organization.
