The Minnesota Department of Transportation - District 4 is currently recruiting for a Seasonal Snow and Ice Driver in Breckenridge, MN. Seasonal positions work approximately November - March of each year. Hours of work are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. During snow and ice operations employees are split into two shifts and will work 8 hours or more depending on the event. Hours will include overtime and various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Examples of work: (A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned):
**Function: Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance**
+ Maintains and reconstructs roadways, rights-of-way, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair; maintains roadsides-installs catch basins, places and removes Adopt-A-Highway bags, performs drainage and shoulder repair.
+ Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for the purpose of maintaining roadways.
+ Performs traffic control set-ups in high volume traffic and ensures they are in accordance with the provisions of the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual, to ensure the safety of the employees and the traveling public.
+ Performs landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, brush, etc. on roadside—planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming and removal. Includes chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding.
**Function: Snow & Ice**
+ Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.
+ Prepares and inspects winter equipment-maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and clean equipment post storm.
+ Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
+ Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.

**Transportation Generalist Minimum Qualifications:**
Must possess a Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction. Must obtain Class A within 6 months.
The level of experience to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with:
+ **Experience** : One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience)
OR
+ **Education:** Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
**AND**
+ Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
+ Applicants are required to take a math and reading assessment. Applicants will be sent an email with details on how to schedule an assessment test as well as information regarding free practice tests. A passing score of level 3 or higher on the math portion of the computerized test and level 4 or higher on the computerized reading test. Passing scores are valid for five years. The job offer is contingent on passing a basic math and reading test.

A revoked, suspended or canceled Driver's License within the last five (5) years may disqualify a candidate or three (3) serious traffic violations during any 12-month period of time will disqualify a candidate.
**Physical Requirements**
The physical demands of this job will vary, but typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.
Weather elements: Will require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.
**Additional Requirements**
NOTE: The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines and semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone).
The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
