Bridge Engineer (NBIS Inspection)

DESCRIPTION

The candidate should be a qualified NBIS Bridge Inspection Team Leader.  They will manage the planning, inspection, safety evaluations and report generation of state and locally owned bridges, culverts, and ancillary structures.  Their inspection experience should include reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel, and timber structures. They will be responsible for mobilization, site supervision and safety, condition inspection of various highway structures, and generation of inspection reports. They will ensure the inspection team is prepared for field work, coordinating the necessary access equipment, permits and maintenance of traffic needs to perform each job and meet NBIS requirements. As needed the candidate will gather the necessary field documentation and perform or oversee structure load ratings.

The position will also perform general civil/structural engineering duties, project management, and business development activities. Under general to limited supervision, analyze engineering data, produce computations and construction plans for infrastructure projects.

Essential Duties

Bridge Inspection Team Leader Duties:

Lead bridge inspections as a team leader Coordinate inspection field work, evaluate bridge conditions, and write/review inspection reports Accurately identify priority maintenance needs, develop repair recommendations and coordinate with the Project Manager Ensure timely submission of inspection documents and compliance with NBIS, and other local, state and federal regulations Oversee inspection assistants, coordinate traffic control sub-contractors, schedule man-lifts and under-bridge cranes for inspections, as needed Assist, or perform Project Manager tasks, attend client meetings, and provide technical leadership. Mentor bridge inspection team members Use hand tools, ladders, mobile elevated work platform and other equipment necessary for proper evaluation of bridges Traveling 20-30% of the year within MD, VA and PA is anticipated Design and Load Rating Duties (may vary depending on experience but generally include): Prepares moderately complex studies, construction documents, maps, basic reports and other supporting documentation to support structural evaluation and design. Prepares or supervises routine load ratings of structures. Prepares quantities, cost estimates and project technical specifications. Interprets data and prepares drawings for highways, structures, and water/wastewater projects. Demonstrates proficient skills using various CAD and Microsoft Office programs to produce high quality design documents, exhibits, computations and reports. Reviews shop drawing for conformance with contract plans. Assists with defining scope of work and man-hour requirements. Assists with proposal production and implementing marketing initiatives. Assists Project Managers and other Engineers in ensuring that project/task schedules and budgets are met. Coordinates with design technicians to ensure timely and accurate deliverables. Prepares documents for regulatory agencies to obtain required permits. Other duties as assigned.

 

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

4+ years of bridge inspection, load rating and related experience Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on bridges or structures from an ABET Accredited University Maryland P.E. (Professional Engineer) preferred NBIS Qualified bridge inspection team leader  Certified Bridge Safety Inspector Nonredundant Steel Tension Member (Fracture Critical) and Tunnel Inspection Certification - Preferred Must be physically fit, have a driver’s license, not be afraid of heights and have good communication and computer skills, ability to work in adverse weather conditions, operate inspection access equipment, carry ladders, work alongside highways and/or railroads Willingness to travel within the MD, VA and PA Desire to work both outside (during all types of weather) and in the office Strong technical and communication skills with a commitment to quality Familiarity with AASHTO and MDOT SHA/MDTA design and construction standards preferred Familiarity with MDOT SHA and MDTA inspection coding, data and policy preferred Familiarity with AASHTOWare and other load rating software is preferred

COMPENSATION
The approximate compensation range for this position is $75,817 to $109,475.  This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.  Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
